Helmet Debate

I've been away for a week and its always good to come back to see the zealots on either side puffing their chests out in "how dare you tell me what to do" indignation!
Just wondered if any members of the "no helmet at any cost" brigade might fancy pitching to the dragons den the idea of helmets for walking home from the pub or in the car etc etc etc as it seems a shame to let the charlatans making bike or ski helmets take all the fools gold??

.... as intelligent people the Dragons would probably give the idea a far better response than someone promoting a safety device on other grounds

Candidate: This is a helmet - if you don't wear one Fact is, if you're flying around on a road bike and smash your head on a kerb, no matter how small the odds are, you're either dead, or your wife and kids are gonna be wiping your backside for you for the rest of your life while you dribble on your chin. Good luck with that. Seriously, whats the big deal? Most of you sound like that knob Jeremy Clarkson. Grow Up.

Dragon: Can you substantiate those claims:

Candidate: Silence

Dragon: Why shouldn't we diversify this into bigger markets where here are more head injuries, after all the effect on the family and individual must be the same no matter what they were doing at the time of injury. WE could save a lot more people form injury as well

Candidate: Silence

Dragon: Can you tell me why you won't answer the question as to why we shouldn't protect these other people - after all surel the head injury is not less traumatic for them or their families?

Candidate: Silence

Dragon: Are you going to answer any of these points?

Candidate: Well one doctor says he has never seen a cyclist hurt whilst wearing one.

Dragon: Ah yes, that brings me back to the original point. The same doctor said that he saw many more motorists and pedestrians with head injuries than cyclists, as it is you reference – will you be applying all of his evidence, or just the one out of context sentence?

Candidate: Exits stage left as he can't actually provide an answer

Dragons look at each other and wonder...

"Darling, I'm going to the pub. Get me my drinking helmet, please!"

Sharon Thornhill (BMJ) * (as stated earlier) links aclohol to 60% of head injuries requiring admission - the single biggest factor!

* As this caused confusion for PK99 earlier on can I point out that :

Sharon Thornhill is a Neourologist who wrote a article on head injuries that was published by the BMJ. It is not the only article ever published by the BMJ, nor is it the only one that has ever been or ever will be published on head injuries. Equally it is not the official viewpoint of the BMJ. Equally it is not the final opinion of any known or yet to be discovered Deity, Religion,Government, Political Party or Dictatorship.

However it does list and analyse the head injuries that required admission to Hospital, and 60% of those are linked to alchol

Candidate: No but imagine the quantity that we can sell by preying on the publics and parents perception of danger.

Dragon: Great, we'll order a million of them and launch an ad campaign. Perhaps we can lobby the government to make them compulsory.

Being hit on the head when out for a walk is possible.
Common things are branches from a tree on windy days, something an idiot throws into the air; less common is ice from a plane.
But, If you want to wear a helmet, then you are free to do so; but because others choose not to does not make them idiots, they calculate the risks, just as you do, but don't feel the need, on the off chance of something happening.
