I’ve always put it in luggage
Really?? And then you put it on your head believing it still offers you any protection? The way luggage gets thrown about, it's likely to suffer more impact than in a RTC, and all manufacturers advise you to replace after that.

The only time I have put a helmet in the hold was a Lidl one when travelling to Australia. I had a weird passive/aggressive thing going on "well, you can make me wear a helmet, but you can't make me wear one that hasn't been mistreated."

Sorry, hand luggage. And no, I don’t think helmets give any significant protection anyway. Usually race rules or local laws is why I have it.

How else will the stewardess know that I am a Triathlete and therefore deserving of only the highest treatment?
By your self assurance, perfect posture due to your core muscles, the V of your torso, and because you keep saying "pardon" due to the water in your ears.
