Whatever time of year you go to Holland there is always one thing you can be sure of that you will get wet.
Take some good waterproofs and when it starts raining dont be afraid to put them on rather than hoping tghe rain might stop
Enjoy your tour, we have loved it there everytime we have been.

a quick question - how soaking wet am I likely to get at the end of the month in Holland? Looking at the weather history, October is insanely wet, but September not so bad... ALso, prevailing wind = SW so should have wind at our backs up the LF1?

I went in the middle of September both times. The first time I went up the LF1, the wind was in my face all the way until I turned right towards Amsterdam, but it didn't rain. The second time the wind was pretty much the same and it did rain. The locals told me that it is best to assume that there will be headwinds on any bike ride.

Hi all, I've been having a bit of a play around with some software we have here called snag-it (basically a fancy version of print screen, makes your cap editable basically) and the opencycle map for Holland. Effectively I can now drag a screen grab off the very detailed map, plonk it into powerpoint, make notes on the sheet and then print to a pdf of good resolution. This can be printed of course, but can also be put onto an iphone, then opened up in ibooks and acts as a printed, zoomable (to a point) map.

If anyone wants a copy of Hoek to Scheveningen (with no notes as yet) PM me and I'll send it over (is about 1 meg for 5 pages) for sampling. I intend to do all our route for next week on it eventually, should work quite nicely and if anyone wants that in the end - I can mail over.

This seems terribly complicated, am I missing something?

Hoek to Scheveningen is approx 17Km, there are three easily followed methods of getting to Scheveningen from the ferry terminal at Hoek v Holland.

Follow the clearly signed route for the LF1b (LF1a for the return journey)towards Den Haag.
Follow the signs for Den Haag, when you reach Den Haag follow signs for Scheveningen, or turn left towards the coast.
Follow the Knooppunt signs guiding you via Knooppunts 21, 09, 06, 03, 23, 24, 38 then head for the coast.

Or you could simply wing it, heading roughly north-east, keeping to the coast with the sea on your left.

Or maybe you just enjoy playing with the technology, which pleasure I would not wish to deny you.

Hoek to scheveningen was just to see if I can do it, I have Hoek to Heemskerk now without notes, which is, yes, a pretty simple route - LF1 then turn right....

What I'll really use it for is day 2 which will be heemskerk to Noordwijk via sunday lunch in Amsterdam as I want to make sure we go past one of my favourite buildings, het Schip

on the way through. I've never cycled through there before so am very wary of getting lost when dropping through to pick up the LF20 and get back onto the Knooppunts.

and yeah, I do love messing about with technology.

At the top left of the map there is a toolbar with seven icons. After you have mapped or selected a route, click the middle icon (picture of a printer). On the page that appears, give your route a name in the box at the top of the screen. Then click the first icon on the left (picture of a printer again). The map with a route description then opens in a PDF that you can print. In the example I used to see how it worked (90km), the map was half a page and the directions 9½.

what's the recommended way of cutting through Amsterdam? I want to cut down from Spaarndammerbuurt (a couple of K west of Centraal) but am not sure whether to go down singel and out via the Vondelpark round the back of Schipol and back to the coast, or whether to follow the Amstel all the way down and cut up to Schipol. The former looks quicker or at least far more direct, but more traffic filled.....

on the way through.

The guided tour of that building is well worth taking. I did it this afternoon!

BTW, between Haarlem and Amsterdam, the LF20 has been diverted due to major roadbuilding at two separate places, the diversions are badly marked and it is easy to get lost. I did last Thursday. Good luck.

thanks for that, I've got big chunks of the LF20 in the route.

The tour of het schip is great, fanboy that I am, I've done it twice now, is the tuba still in the attic space? This trip is all about a circuit of de dageraad, if you're still in the area it's well worth the loop apparently.

Quick question - has anyone had any trouble getting on the 1820 out of Liverpool street (aka the Dutch Flyer) on a Friday night headed for Harwich? It turns out I can't reserve spaces for the bikes, and the advixe was "get there early and make sure your bike gets on....."

I have never tried the train. I enquired two years ago and was told that there were three bike spaces on each train. I guess it just depends which side of the bed the guard got out of on Friday morning.

Have always travelled on the Saturday night boat, so not been any issues with bikes on trains. Its quite a nice ride from Manningtree if you dont want to take a train all the way into Harwich.
watch out for the stupid bike racks they try to make you use on the ferry. Stand your ground and in the end they let you tie your bike up to the railings on the side of the car deck like you have always done.
Btw I have a few maps for sale on Yacf if you are interested?

One last question for the panel (I promise) and this is probably more for the Nederlanders out there - what are the chances of finding somewhere showing the world road race on Sunday afternoon somewhere between Amsterdam and Noordwijk? To be honest, I can only think of maybe 2 places in London that'll show it so I may be pi$$ing in the (head)wind a bit...
