If there's anyone who has a decent knowledge on bikes near me then I could really use some help. I work full time and can't get to a bike shop at the moment. Riding a mountain bike on a long road commute and having trouble with the gears.

What's the trouble? We'll see if we can help by correspondence.

Let me guess- the rear gears no longer seem to change smoothly and keep jumping - right? You've tried fiddling with the adjuster and that hasn't helped, right?

You've been riding the bike for some time and enjoying the good range of gears and what's happened is that the cable outer, where it curves round to the rear derailleur, has worn and the inner cable is sticking. Only a new cable outer will resolve that problem but when you do fit one, you'll be amazed at how smooth and easy gear changing becomes again and how you became accustomed to the gradual deterioration. The cable outer can sometimes need changing as often as every six months.

I don't think this is the problem. Mrs Fry's bike is, I think, pretty much new.

See details of the problem here, from post #36:

https://www.cyclechat.net/

However, you've probably pointed me in the right direction for the problems I'm experiencing with my bike, thanks.

I'm now confused. The OP was from Mrs Fry, Debian is now saying thanks for the advice. Are you one and the same or am I going slightly mad?

Have we skipped our coffee this morning?

Mrs Fry has a new bike which needs the gears setting up.

Globalti probably hadn't read her other thread and assumed that the problem was down to cable wear, so suggested a solution on that basis.

Debian pointed out Globalti's possible error but recognised that the suggested solution might fix issues with his own bike.

And no, I'm neither Mrs Fry nor Debian, nor indeed Globalti. But I might be Paulus.

Correct.

Sorry to cause confusion, I was indeed pointing Globalti in the direction of Mrs Fry's thread but he did cause a light bulb to go off in my head about an issue I'm currently experiencing.

are there any cyclists at work mrs fry? in most large organisations and plenty of mid sized ones you'll probably find one or two keenies, who may not commute to work on their bikes but put the miles in at the weekend.

try asking on the company intranet/canteen noticeboard etc to see if there's anyone that could do a quick fettle in their lunch hour…

Certainly did point me in the correct direction Globalti. I knew about this and for some reason I clean forgot and didn't think of it until I saw your post.

I changed cable and all outers, surprising how much muck was inside the outers and how sticky the cable was. New bits and all is well again.

Many thanks for awakening my memory!
