Eight weeks ago my mate forked out £200 to have a compact put on his Dawes Giro 300 bike .It was Sora components .

Well last week outside Grassington the crank fell off .We managed to screw it back on .

The shop he had it done with .Did a repair .On saturday outside York it fell off again .This time he hit the floor .He thinks he has broken two ribs .

Bikehut .Did a free repair .But on the way back it fell off again .

Anyone got any ideas what is wrong .It's going back to the shop today .

With a very angry cyclist .Whose best bike is now not fit for purpose. And he is wary of riding it .

Does he have any legal rights to get this bike back to a road worthy condition .

if they've not fitted the part properly or it's a faulty part then yes he has a legal right to get it repaired for free. Most bike shops shouldn't even blink at fixing it for him for free.

If the component was fitted by the bike shop that he boguht it from, then he definitely has a legal right.

He also has a legal right if he installed it himself (if the component was faulty), but proving that he fitted it as per the manufacturer's instruction is going to be tricky.

Latest .The shop guy was amazed that his crank fell off .The Doc has confirmed he has broken two ribs .

The shop who fitted the compact .Cleaned it and put some form of locktite adhesive to it .With the instruction to come back if it falls off .If that does happen he will contact Shimano and seek advice .

Once it has been ridden loose and fallen off once it's no good for further use - the shop should have known this and not tried to fit it back on.

The first shop should have tightened it properly - BUT it is common that they need re-tightening after a ride or two. You should have been told this and you should have done this or taken it back to the shop for them to do it.

Bikehut putting it back on after it had fallen off several times is a joke unless they did it to enable you to ride home (very slowly). Don't try and fix it again - it's ready for the bin!

Thanks all for your replies .

Apart from breaking two ribs when he fell off .He seems ok .

He is not happy with the bike .So much so he has bought and picks up tomorrow a Boardman Road Comp .

He will get satisfaction with this crank ,he is giving the lbs a chance to put things right .
