Anyone eard of viking road bikes? Opinions?
Mostly cheap, entry level, heavy, old components

The Triban 3 is certainly the best specced and regarded new bike in the sub £400 (and probably £500) category

Hybrids are a whole different category with more choice under £400

Depends if you want flat bars or dropped bars really (and to some extent the surfaces and distances you will be riding, as well as the need for mudguards and racks)

Hi Bengord, My mate has just got into Road cycling and bought a Viking Roma. I think they are Go Outdoors' own brand! He paid around £350 with the discount card. He's really made up with it. Just looked on the Go Outdoors website and it's now down to £212 with the discount card!!!

One of my bikes is a Viking Cordoba, lightweight alloy framed hybrid. I've had it about 4 yrs and it has proved to be a very reliable workhorse.
I've never had any mechanicals apart from a bent rear derailleur which was the result of a fall and nothing to do with the construction.
It came with full Shimano group set.
Not all of their bikes have, quote;....heavy, old components. .......unquote.
I've never regretted buying it.

No, but the Viking Roma would appear to

£400 generally buys you a higher specced flat bar bike than road bike - in reality, decent STI shifters cost more than flatbar EZ shifters (whatever they are called)

£400 would certainly buy you a high specced barely used Specialized Sirrus Elite or similar if you go the flat bar route

Just seen that the OP bought a Viking bike - hope it serves him well

My Torino is getting on a bit 2007/8, but I have covered over 4000 miles (3300 since July), Sora mech's tektro brakes, wheels probable the worst aspect must have had 6-8 broken spokes all but one since June (the other was on the way back from London the bike was less than 2 wks out of the shop, Bill Hargreaves Dewsbury), when i re started back in June I have changed the rear mech to an Acera (M.T.B.) and the rear cassette to a lower ratio, (its now back on the 13-26 it came with) and changed the front chainset for a more touring oriented gearing, though again I am beginning to find its a little short geared. Weight well I carry panniers and a rack and full mud guards, so is well in excess of the above quoted 12Kg, I look at it this way, it's extra weight training, so should I go for a lighter bike, well watch my p.b's fall (not that they are great, maybe its the bike)

105 groupset carbon forks.
or
http://www.rutlandcycling.com/43868/Viking-Vittoria-105-Road-Bike.html £475 carbon forks 105 gear set I think I read it came in at just over 10kg
http://www.rutlandcycling.com/44223/Viking-Torino-Mens-Road-Racing-Bike.html carbon forks Sora gear set £329, though its only an 8 sp cassette.
http://www.rutlandcycling.com/43867/Viking-Circuit-Tiagra-Road-Bike.html £425 Tiagra gear set.
Just one thing though they are geared very high for someone just starting out, something to bear in mind.
