Hya my name is Barbara Frost and I am trying to cycle from Rome to Reading to raise money for our local premature baby unit at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. I am doing this unsupported, solo, and wonder if anyone has a good route from Orange to Lyon - at the moment I am on the N7 just outside Orange but have had 50mph head winds today which, because the road is very busy, makes it quite dangerous. I would love any suggestions. Thanks

Hi Barbara,

What an amazing challenge and great cause. I would love to hear more about this trip, the RBH is dear to me as I was born there!

Let me start by saying I have no experience of cycling in this part of France, the only bit I have done is from the north coast to Paris. However in an effort to help I have looked at the map and it is clear how you have ended up on the N7, it is the logical route. The real major towns along the way are arranged along the east of the main rivers, I wonder if you would be better off on the D routes to the west of the rivers?

Maybe you have researched it already but perhaps crossing at Mondragon and then continue north west and cross further west at Pont-Saint-Esprit? It might add a bit of distance but then you have the D86 tracking north, it won't help with the wind but it will be quieter than the Route National N7.

It will also allow you to avoid Montellimar which looks like a massive (and difficult to navigate by cycle) type of large town.

Further north near Le Peage de Roussillon the D86 leads on to the D1086 and then the D386 passing through some national parks which has got to be nice, all of these roads keep tracking alongside the river. The D386 leads to Brignais which then allows you to choose your route in to Lyon for the last 10-20 miles.

Let us know how you get on and good luck.

Hi Barbara
I am sorry to hear about your headwind. I did Lyon to Orange in 2010 as part of a ride from Calais to Narbonne. I had originally intended to stick to small roads and had the details of a route from via Michelin which avoided the N7 but because the Rhone the N7 A7(route de soleil) and the TGV line all run alongside each other on the valley floor it is quite a climb to reach the other roads which are far from direct.
Since I am unable to offer more than moral support I'll give you a laugh. Just outside Lyon heading for Venne I accidentally got on the A7 rather than the N7. Once I realised my mistake I had no option but to cycle as fast as i could on the hard shoulder hoping to reach an exit before I heard any emergency vehicles. To cut a long story short my bike and I had a lift in an emergency vehicle to just outside Vienne.
A headwind is not so bad! If you would like any help or you would like to see my route:

Good luck and bon courage.
