Living Legend & Old Fart
A few years ago, I wanted to visit as many of the 76 Thai provinces as I could so I hit on a plan. According to the Chinese horoscope I am in my 5th cycle so why not visit a village school in 60 of the provinces and reward 5 deserving students with a bicycle each. After the death of my wife I abandobed the plan but feel now is the time to modify and implement this plan.
With the help of my LBS and two cycling clubs, we intend to visit the 'village schools' in the Korat area and then furher afield. We decided on village schools because these are at the bottom end of the social ladder and need help - a lot of these students walk long distances to school and then have to take care of relatives or help out on the family farm after school.
We shall be cycling as a group to the selected school and the give a presentation on cycling and road safety, inspect and repair (foc) students existing bikes and finally present one deserving student in each year with a new bicycle - students will be chosen both on effort in school and also on home and personal circunstances, We are hoping to make this a monthly event.
The bikes will not be Tesco specials but fairly decent ones - I have arranged with the LBS to supply at wholesale prices and have just e-mailed a Thai manufacturer to see if he will supply at cost.
