Help with Tree Stump.

I have dug plenty worse out.

You have gone about it correctly but there will be roots directly underneath.

I would use a big axe (make sure the head is held firm!) and then chop the roots that are showing as close to the trunk as poss.

That enables you to get a spade right under the trunk until you meet a root. I then expose about 1 foot of root and then axe both ends and take the chopped bit out. Then it's back to the spade and repeat.

After a while you can rock the thing - it doesn't loosen it much but it does show where the roots that need cutting are.

It usually takes me about 20 hours of hard graft to get a trunk like that out!

Personally I'd go for the burning option, you would need to construct a stove over the stump, basically an inverted oil drum with some air holes in the side and a chimney as tall as possible to create draft and then use a slow burning very hot fuel, such as coal.
It will still take many hours to burn down though, but its a lot less hard work

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned dynamite yet...

If it had to be out yesterday, get a contractor in. If it *really* had to be out yesterday, get yourself digging deeper, pronto.

Actually Reiver, judging by the photo, you are definitely over the worst, I suspect you have just hit a mental block, a temporary lack of enthusiasm for the job.
Now just make a resolution to stay off CycleChat tomorrow and get straight out there and dig, saw, and hew with your axe, with grim determination not to let that stump stump you.

[QUOTE 2415014, member: 9609"]Any ideas for this. Eucalyptus tree, cut the tree down about three years ago didn't think would ever bother with the stump, but the wife has decided it needs to go. It's in a part of the garden that I can't get any machinery into to pull it out - so decided to dig it out. Two foot down each side and cut all the roots, it's still as solid as a rock, can't burn it out as it is a bit close to neighbours fence, (she has lots of stuff growing up other side so can't temporarily take down)

What's going to be down there if I keep digging, another tree ? getting sick of it.

Reminds me of the lavender tree we had in our garden that was quite big with branches growing over the hedge into next doors, i think it took me about 3-4 days to get the stump out with lots of groaning and swearing and beer
