I'm coming round to the idea of rubber gloves

I tried rubber gloves, shredded them changing a tube and went back to keeping a J cloth under the saddle for lifting the oilier bits of the bike out of the way.

It's a conversation piece as well. At the lights...

Bloke on a generic road bike: You've got a J cloth under your saddle.
Me: (because I think that observant observations merit reply) Yes.
Bloke: Why?
Me: For holding the chain when I take the rear wheel off.
Bloke: Oh.
Me: You can also wipe down your bike with it after rain and suchlike.
Bloke: Oh.

Social life as a cycle commuter in London is full. Very rich.

that time spent waiting until the lights change must fly by

however, a j cloth isn't a bad idea, one to add to the pannier maybe.

I've helped out a fair few colleagues with bikes.......

Straitened a properly bent (i.e. busted) rear wheel as best I could for a lad on a fixed, kept him going for a few months until his dad's 'box of spares' produced some new wheels.... Sorted same lad umpteen times for various tools...helped fix punctures.

Another colleague...grinding noises on her tourer....chain guard slightly knocked into chain... fixed...blooming oily though...

Advised another colleague with his Madone 5.2 - the bonty wheels kept going out of true......
