I picked up a frameset at a car boot this morning because it was so cheap I thought it was worth it just for having a spare pair of 1” threaded forks. I’d never heard of the brand but it is badged as being 531c and it’s got Campy dropouts. So even with a stuck in bottom bracket it was worth the £5 I gave for it I think. The bb shell is plastic so presumably won’t be too hard to get out with some combination of gentle sawing / plumbers torch. It looks likes someone has had a bit of a go already so it might benefit from a bit of refacing too.

I was just wondering if anyone can tell me anything about Helton? Is it the same Helton that now makes tandem roof carriers? I guess they are Yorkshire based given it was sold in Huddersfield.

The plan is to build it up with as many of the spare bits I have as I can. It’s basically a tool for tidying up my parts stash …. Yeah that’s it. I’m slightly annoyed that I bought this and then saw a quite nice 70s record player that I didn’t have enough cash left for (the car boot is in a field a long way from a cash machine) but there we are. Record player probably didn’t work anyway. …

Sorry , don’t know anything about Helton. But that should be a great frame once you’ve sorted the bottom bracket out, in a good size too. I like that a lot 👍

Thanks for the lead - maybe I'll give them a call.

I've been weighing up the bits on the shelves whilst I was on the trainer earlier - I think I have everything I need to build this up as a 2/3 x 8 Camapgnolo set up other than a headset (don't have any of those lying about at all) and brakes (I have some 105 callipers somewhere though).

I'll update when it's done.

Plastic BB came out easily once I’d cut out a wedge. The threads look ok. I might have caught them a tiny bit with the hacksaw but I’m sure it’ll be fine. The previous person to try has made a right mess of the face though.

EDIT. Found the spare BB. Threads are fine. It’s starting to look like a bike. It has wheels, tyres, brakes, a stem, bars and a crankset (currently without any chainwheels but you can’t have everything). Progress now paused while I decide whether to put 8 speed stuff on or swap with 10 speed (which will involve a bit more work in swapping bits).
