OK so after literally decades of not riding a bike I went and got myself a Raleigh Twenty "Shopper". After riding around in the rain and finding myself unable to stop I bought a new Strumey Archer 3-speed coaster brake hub and a BMX rim and made a wheel. I cobbled a random plastic box onto the rear rack and gave all the bearings a good greasy seeing to, and now here it is. I have been enjoying it tremendously.

However, with the standard 15t rear sprocket I had a first gear, a second gear and a "what the Hell is this even for" gear.

I am currently running an 18t rear sprocket (came with the hub) which gives me a VERY granny gear in 1st and I can then use 2nd and 3rd gears a lot. It ain't fast but it's not meant to be. It's a SHOPPER after all, so that's what is does quite well.

However I then acquired a second bike exactly like the first one and that bike is going to be my special duty gee-whiz one. I'm putting another SA coaster brake hub in a BMX rim and I'm going to have the frame denuded of things like the pump lugs and the mudguards and chain cover and have it powder coated white or yellow or something, anything but hideous brown.

So there you go. I will soon have TWO Raleigh Twenty bikes because I'm a nerd.

Naw… that doesn’t make you a nerd.

but two years from now when you’re the wrong side of $1000 into one bike in modifications we’ll talk.

then I’ll show you my nerd bike.
