Hernia Op

I work away so not that simple.

Why not ask your GP to refer you to the specialist hernia clinic which can be found at the John Coupland Hospital in Gainsborough, which isn't too far away from where you live. https://www.nhs.uk/Services/hospitals/Services/DefaultView.aspx?id=30006

For the life of me I can't recall the name of the consultant surgeon who set this specialist clinic up 14 years ago, but he is the lead consultant general surgeon at the Lincoln County Hospital who, using his words "I have a peculiar fascination for hernias", which is why he set this clinic up!
He is an amazing guy who is about 5' nothing tall, is as black as the ace of spades and talks with a strong tribal African accent and what he does is better than amazing as you walk into the room, have the opp and then walk out again only a relative few minutes later.
Because of NHS rules, they are not restricted to only dealing with Lincolnshire only patients and as I wrote yesterday, this amazing man guarantees that no one will have to wait no more than 2 weeks for their opp.

The absolute bonus, is that as the opp is only done under a local anaesthetic it is nowhere near as invasive as almost all procedures carried out by other surgeons in the country.................... and I didn't feel a thing!

You won't loose anything by giving it a try.

The hernia op is amongst the basic surgery there is. I really wouldn't hanging around waiting for a specific doctor \ surgeon.
There are two ways of doing the the OP:-
Open Surgery
Keyhole

Open surgery is the more invasive - but the keyhole op takes longer. I had the invasive - I was in a fair bit of pain for 2 weeks - off work for 4 weeks but swimming at 6 weeks. I was off the bike anyway with a hip injury. Recovery varies massively mine was towards the longer end of the scale.
- what I would say is take the pain meds as prescribed, even if you feel you don't need them (anesthetic will mask the pain as you wake up)
Also have some prune juice handy - as you can get constipated and you don't want to be straining a no 2 out, just after a hernia op !.

I had an inguinial hernia done a couple of years ago. Up walking almost immediately but over a few days extensive bruising appeared and the whole genital area turned almost black. This concerned me a lot so into A&E on a Saturday morning since I was not in my home area. Terrible service in Oban. — I had to wait at least 10 minutes before being seen by a doctor. This apparently happens sometimes but nothing to worry about they said and it did fade eventually. It did take about 6 weeks tho’ before I was happy cycling again. Just my bad luck I suppose to get the rare complications.

Had an op almost three years ago.Recovery time and after effects do seem to vary from experiences related on here.
IIRC the surgeon said I could cycle from 24 hours after the operation, (much to Mrs B's annoyance), but to take it easy for 4 weeks or so. But your own surgeon will advise you. However, whilst I was allowed to cycle, getting on and off the bike was a world of pain and discomfort. So unless you have a step through frame, you may find the mind is willing, but the flesh tells you to sod off. At least for a couple of weeks.
Aside from not, as already mentioned, getting constipated, I would also suggest you try, before and after the operation, to avoid anyone who has a cough and/or cold. Stomach spasms when coughing and sneezing can, IME be painful for several days afterwards. I found the spasm could be controlled to some extent but not completely, but there is no point in inflicting yourself to unnecessary discomfort if it can be avoided..

I wouldn't say thats complications - I would say thats pretty much the norm. But worrying at the time I was up at the GP 5 days post op :-
