Go to registered physio - GPs are just referral agents on a grossly inflated salary.

Only just saw this post.

...

About a month later, I tried again, and touch wood, so far, no pain. No idea what caused it - my knee wasn't noticeably swollen, and as I said, whenever I had pain it was only to do with bending the knee - whether I put weight on it or not made no difference: I could have done ten squats holding nothing, or holding heavy weights and the pain would have been the same.

It seems back to normal at the moment, and I'm trying to regain the lost fitness, and lose the gained pounds! I wasn't very active on here whilst I was off as for me this site is very connected to my cycling - sorry for not noticing sooner!

When my ITB went a few years ago it was agony, touchwood I found out that some light excerises occaisionally ease it off before it becomes a problem. GWS @CopperCyclist

ITB sounds like a distinct possibility - look online for simple advice - simple stretches with a roller work wonders.

Well, completed a 107 mile ride over the last weekend - but the knee started hurting again. At least I managed to complete it this time, and the recovery was much, much faster. Still haven't got round to seeing a physio, must sort that now.

I'm likely to be on a lot less from now on though simply due to the forum leaving Tapatalk. I think this is probably only the third message I've ever posted without going through tapatalk - I barely ever use the laptop!

Well done CopperCyclist on the miles!! Have to agree with Primal Scream though. Dial up the Physio and let him try to sort your knee ....... you know it makes sense.
Not used tapatalk myself, so I can't judge what a pain it may be to post without it. But, I am proof that it's not impossible.
Hope you stick around, but good luck to you, what ever you decide to do.
