HG50 cassette

My MTB is about 15-16 years old. It's fitted with a Deore LX rear derailleur and an 8 speed cassette. Will that be compatible with a Sora HG50 cassette? The ratios look closer plus it would offer me a higher gear of 12.

I think that as long as they have the same number of gears you can swap any shimano cassettes, swap the chain too though.

Or SRAM - and unless it's recently been changed, I agree with themosquitoking - replace the chain at the same time.
