Hi all,

got back into cycling a couple of months ago, I'm 34 now, did a lot in my teens (is this all sounding familiar??).

I've got a Specialized Rockhopper pro-comp disc with road tyres (26x1.5), doing a 25mile hilly loop most days to get back in shape, currently a rather stodgy 16st13, and a bit short for that weight!!

Did a PB for my 20mile loop today of 1hr 3min which felt really good, the cool night air was really refreshing and it felt really quick!

Anybody in the Southampton area fancy hooking up? On the 25mile loop I average around 16-18mph but can push on in places, if there are people out there on this sort of pace or maybe a bit quicker to drag me along would be awesome!

;)

Kind regards

Andy

thta sounds pretty fast for 20 miles. Isn't it an MTB? Try going for a ride with Sotonia... local club

Hi there,

It is a MTB, but the road tyres I keep up at 70psi, it's a pretty 'free' to ride, I'll give Sotonia a try, thanks

www.sotonia.co.uk There are usually three or four groups on the Sunday club run, sounds like you'd be fine in a medium group (17mph'ish over 60'ish miles with a tea stop). Just turn up at the start and say hi, it's fine to come on a few runs before joining.

Thanks for the welcome's

Not sure I could manage a 60 though!!! But I'm planning to pop along maybe I'll get on for 40, but that's a big leap from my little 25's!!

It's easier in a group and there's a tea stop. I usually lead the faster medium group (if that makes any sense!), there's normally a slightly slower medium group which you could try for a first time, there's no pressure to take turns on the front. I think the slow group (12mph'ish) would be too slow for you. Just introduce yourself at the start and we'll sort something out.

Hi Dave, I was the fat guy on the Red Specialized Mountain bike (white T-Shirt), I was in the slower medium group, I don't really know anyone's name.... we averaged 17 over 45miles if that narrows anything down??!

Was you then, you were chatting to my mate Mark (scott cr1) on the way back, he said you were going pretty well. Sorry, about how Ian spoke to you at the start 'no way' etc. was no need to be like that. My group (first medium off after the fast) did 65 miles at 18 ave. which is about as fast/far as we go, sounds like you'd manage ok, especially if you get some faster tyres. I've got some spare Specialised 1" slicks if you're interested, would swap them for something heavier or 20 quid.

If it was Mark I was leading with for a bunch of miles, then yeah he's really cool! He had been out of the saddle for a few weeks he was saying so just stretching his way back in to it.

I didn't really understand how the speeds worked on my first outing, and nobody wants to say "I'm really fast!!", but I think I may be able to handle that, I found group riding much easier than expected, and could have averaged higher. I don't look like a cyclist (yet!) but got a bit of poke developing  I did really enjoy the group I went out with, and having the little bit in reserve allowed for chatting which I enjoyed - I think fast med would be a real workout for me

I've got 26x1.5" if I could go thinner then I *definitely* would!! Maybe come find me on Sunday if you're there as I didn't get to say 'hi' to you properly and you can have a look at what I've got and whether there's something we can do?

I can't really afford a road bike, and the mountain bike I really like, I can just mash the potholes and kerbs, eventually I'll get a road bike and see how quick I can go... I want to do 10 and 25miles races soon when I'm a bit quicker

1.5" slicks should roll pretty well as long as they're pumped up good and hard but you're probably still working at least 10% harder to maintain the same pace as you would on a road bike. Not sure if I'll be out this Sunday as my knee is giving me gip and i miight have to rest it, but I always take the second group if I'm there. Will be on a Bianchi with mrs d in tow on a Le Mond. If you want to come with my group you don't need to do any work on the front unless you want to so you shouldn't have a problem. As I said, 18 mph average is about the fastest we go and it could be under 17 depending on the route and who's out. I do tend to leave the cafe stop 'till late though, usually 40 - 50 miles then a short run back so a snack (i.e banana) in your pocket is a good idea.
