I'm trying to think of an example of a commonly used item known by it's nickname.

I've been asked to give a talk on cycling history and want an answer when someone tells me I should call Pennies, Ordinaries. A name they only had for a handful of years before which they were just bicycles.

That is an interesting comparison of a common usage trade name with completely different meanings and uses.....
