Injury update
Have not been able to cycle since the accident, running is OK .Elbow still hurting. bad in some positions . I have taken the forums advise regarding emergency stops etc , I do not think I would be in total control of the bike.
I will try my regular commute on Monday hopefully I should be OK.

I'm always wary of dog on opposite side of path/road to owner. Usually dogs have a self-preservation by-pass when it comes to instructions from its owner, and hence will do something that it will usually regard as stupid, as it assumes that its owner knows better (bit like drivers and Satnav instructions).
This is not made better by the habit of owners to default to the command 'Here', as opposed to 'Stay' in an emergency. Hence they will see you, note where there dog is, and call it over, just at the point where your prospective paths will cross at the same instant.

wary doesn't cut it.

pretty much have to assume the dog WILL move across.... So i'd definately unclip as approaching, slow right down and get the "tut tut" ready and paddington stare at the stupid owner..

hope your arm gets better.

Also applies to children and their parents!

I was out on my MTB once, approaching some young children and two adults. I called out to the group and the man grabbed the woman and yanked her to one side (even though I was riding slowly and still about 30 yards away) but they completely ignored their kids who were just behind them. I assumed that the kids would do what kids do and they did! They ran right in front of me as I drew level with them and their dad then started shouting at them "for nearly getting knocked down" - tosser!

So after toughing it out foe two weeks ,no bike riding but regular running, last night I had a particularly painful night so took the bull by the horns and went to the Middlesborough A/E .
After a couple of hours and an X ray later i have a broken elbow !!
So for a few posters out there ,you were right and I feel suitably chastised.
The worse thing is , Emma and the young one, plus family (I stay at home) were visiting here sister in Notts
when I rang to tell her i was at the hospital she told me her Gran (who traveled with them) fell down the stairs and was waiting for the ambulance to take her to hospital !!
What a weekend.
So now I am of to Darlington station to pick Emma and the bairn up .
