There really does need to be leaflets out about filtering on the left of buses and trucks - NOW before more are killed.... just don't do it.....

There seems to be a lot of this recently... massive shame..but positive action is needed..

I'm not sure it's the time to be quite so critical Jake.

We all do daft things from time to time. If we're lucky, we live to regret them.

+1 Plus do we actually know what happened?

Women don't think "BIG" like men do. It's men who like MEGA structures and MEGA vehicles. we don't grow up being taught about vehicles like men do, it might seem obvious to men but its because you are in that "MEGA world" and we are not taught or told about the mechanics of turning circles, especially where large vehicles are concerned so quite often its women who get squished by lorries and dumper trucks. Men learn by example of other men, women don't have this luxury and we don't usually learn until we've made a near fatal mistake.

I've just read the TIL article. Very sad.

One thing struck me - the comment from one user suggests that in Switzerland iirc they supposedly have to be licensed with plates and all on cycles to use the roads. If this were true why have I never heard of this before?

Despite what the "witnesses" say it seems illogical that she tried to undertake at that point in the road. I wonder if they actually saw the incident at all? Ofcourse I could be misreading the photograph

Second thing is the railings. I know they dont want pedestrians running into the road and want them using the crossings instead, but jesus christ just get a bylaw passed on jaywalking in the area instead FFS.

I started to write a response about what you mentioned about the railings and found myself listing a fairly substantial number of issues for cyclists around the two roundabouts.

This surprised me as I hadn't realized how used to the junction I had become and also how much I was deploying varying tactics to get round it.

I don't think this is the place for that sort of contribution so I might post my thoughts on E&C elsewhere, however in essence I think the attempt to plan a junction that can process as many motor vehicles as possible with as little delay as possible severely compromises the safety of cyclists and frequently fails to serve motorists needs as well.

The fact that at E&C railings are often on top of parapets that prevent people/vehicles leaving the road and falling into the pedestrian underpasses and that the roadway immediately abuts these is an inherent danger in the design of the junction - the road width is maximized and there are no escape routes.

The complexity of the junction for all road users is also an issue and I can see parallels between problems here and those on London's bridges.

Regardless of blame and anatomizing peoples behaviour on the road this is a tragedy and as much as possible should be done to avoid these deaths. A lot more thought has to go into our urban infrastructure.

witnessed can often think they saw something they didn't - with my accident a couple of witnesses said they saw me cycling TOWARDS the lorry!?!? the police investigator said that often people see just after an accident, and their brain makes up what they think happened.

One of the reasons I always use a camera on the bike. The best witness you can get if its caught on video.

Glad you pulled through btw. ;)

thanks, me too

luckily there was a bus behind with camera on the front, so the police know which witnesses to believe!

Very sad.

However, what we don't need is knee jerk reactions from politicians suggesting cyclists should be allowed to go through on red. How would this have helped these two cyclists?

A much better suggestion would be to offer free cycle training to everyone who wanted to cycle. Yes this would cost money up front, but think of the benefits, more, safer cyclists, better health, less congestion, less pollution etc. It is time for big changes, not for uneducated knee jerks. IMO.

Whilst Boris has intermittently been promoting his "Left Turn On Red" for over a year, the timing of this proposal does smack of opportunism...

I have no idea if LTOR would have "helped" these cyclists and I wouldn't want to speculate due to the paucity of info currently available.

Free and subsidised training is available - the problem is making people aware of the courses -then it's only a case of trying to persuade prospective cyclists and cyclists to take it up!

Of course we can't speculate on these particular incidents, what I think the LTOR would do (and I've said this elsewhere) is encourage cyclists to left filter up to lights.

Imagine a fairly inexperienced cyclist moving to the front of the queue...

Should I filter on the right (safer) or left....mmmmm. Oh yes, if I filter on the left I'll be able to sneek round to the left at the lights, as Boris said it's ok.......

As for free training, I agree it needs some serious advertisement, but this is exactly what Boris and others should be focusing on if they REALLY want to make a difference. Playing about at the edges, changing rules etc, won't make much difference and, if done incorrectly as I think is the case here, can do more harm than good.
