Hi All,

Was slowly filtering up through a line of traffic this morning and all of a sudden a driver decided to make a right turn without checking her mirrors.

Luckily I managed to serve out of the way but caught her car with my left pedal. My back wheel also took a bit of a knock. I managed to stay upright and the lady stopped, apologised, asked if i was ok and we exchanged details.

She has said she will pay for any damage etc.

The only damage I can see is to the left pedal and a buckle in the wheel. Im taking it to the LBS tomorrow for a full look over and repair quote.

Few questions,

Do i need to inform the police?
Any idea on costs? I just want it put right asap as i rely heavily on it.

Bike is a Boardman CX team with the standard Ritchey wheels

Thanks in advance

The best advice I can give is to go down to the local station and ask to speak to a traffic or cycle cop for some advice. They may not record it.

The other advice is to document/photo any damage to the bike. Take video of the wheel spinning to show the buckle (may need to place the bike upside down & use a tripod/chair/table to fully show any play in the wheel). Get full quotes for damage repair or replacement and ask to get her insurer's details (its funny how many drivers wont pay out and quibble over costs - thats what we have insurance for).

Buckles can be sorted unless the rim is dinged. Without seeing it I can't say. Pedal, what's wrong? If scuffed up then a new pair is anything from £30 upwards depending on model. Truing a wheel may cost £20

Why? There's no bodily injury or apparent driving misdemeanour so it's just a civil matter.

I thought turning without checking mirrors could fall under driving without due care and attention?? Could easily have been a more serious accident if jamin hadnt been able to get out of the way

I would report it to police and get a reference number, it can only help if you have if you have to deal with insurance companies

Hope you get your bike sorted quickly ^_^

If everyone took that approach with road collisions then the police wouldn't have the resources to do anything else.

The police won't be interested and a reference number will make no difference.
