Hiya, I'm Keith and I'm new to this forum  I'm from Newcastle, living in North Tyneside and soon to be moving to the Whitley Bay/Monkseaton area. I thought I'd register and say hello.

My workplace have recently offered an opportunity to "obtain" a bike under the cycle scheme and I've taken them up on it. I've been thinking for quite some time that I would like to take up cycling to improve my general fitness and to ease my guilt for doing my 4 mile daily commute by car.
I've chosen the Specialized Crosstrail Sport which I should receive in early Jan. I couldn't find much in the way of reviews online but after trying the bike it felt fantastic. My daily commute will be completed mostly by cycle path but there are a few loose gravel tram tracks which I'll be negotiating. Road bikes scare me, mountain bike seemed like overkill for the route so the Crosstrail felt like a good... ermm, hybrid!

I have some cycling experience from my teens, atleast before I went off to Uni, learnt to drive and subsequently became relatively unfit! I'm a little bit anxious about any time spent on the road with motorists but I should be able to keep this to a minimum until I'm more confident.

My father is very active (puts me to shame!) and we've spoke of my intention to take up cycling. We've decided between us that as a target for next year we will be gunning for the 140mile Whitehaven to Tynemouth C2C over 3 days. Holy hell I'm worried already! Atleast I have a goal now to work towards (haha!).

Thanks for reading!

It's not as bad as it sounds - and if it's over three days you'll do fine.

Just start out with some short rides to get your body used to being back on a bike and providing you stick at it the mileage will increase without you even realising it ...

You'll find a good mix of advice here from speed demons to plodders like myself - so ask away and I'm sure you'll be ready and raring by the time the ride comes up.

Cheers,
Shaun

:welcome: Keith, just up the road in North Shields, good choice on the Specialised, I have one, good solid bike, as for the C2C, I did it in May, slightly longer 176 miles from Ravenglass to Tynemouth over the 3 days, I am a lard arse and I manged no problem, doing the Reivers one next May

Best tip, get plenty of miles in before hand, including some hill climbing, I done my C2C on the Specialised, with rack and 2 panniers and trained with them loaded up before hand, plenty of good tracks around here, started off with 20 milers then built up to 50/60 mile runs, you will be fine.
