I did this a few years back, ended up in a great place in France. I would thoroughly recommend doing it, but remember to get your post redirected for the period of the swap!

Not sure my wife would like the idea, probably not , but anyway..... I live in a detached 8 bedrooms house in sunny Bournemouth, a couple of minutes from the beach. I'd love to spend a week somewhere in the countryside.
It would probably be just my wife and I.... my kids left home quite a while ago and the youngest one is still at uni and probably has other plans.

Crikey Manonabike - 2 of you in an 8 bedroom house  - that must be a bit weird?

Do you not rattle around a bit?

I'm in a 7 bed house and my folks have a 'granny flat' at the back. I don't rattle too much as there isn't much space left after you take the two workshops and all the building work and materials into account.

I like the idea of a holiday swap but I'd want to swap with a builder who finishes all the building work while I am away.

I think swaps are a great idea - I assume there are websites where these things could be arranged.

I would be a a bit nervous though - I think a lot of background checking / a lot of insurance cover etc would be needed to be shown to me before I swapped my house with a stranger.

Or, each householder also employs (for beer and cake) about a dozen independent CCers, to camp on the lawn and keep an eye on the on in the house. Armed with pumps and D locks and stuff.

(Seriously, it's a neat idea, alas, my flat is suitable for one only, or two small people, or a family of voles.)

That's funny

I love the space and that is one of the reasons why we will not move into something smaller..... having said that, for Christmas and sometimes in the summer the house is full. The kids with their other halves + friends etc come to spend times with us.

We are a family of four, but the kids barely wreck much at all nowadays!

Who fancies swapping houses for a week or two in August? I know there will be lots of sarcastic replies, but I am willing to wade through these. Scotland, the Lakes, Northumbria or West Wales preferred, but I am more than happy to consider anywhere, except somewhere in Somerset.

Anyone?

I've mentioned it to my better half & she's considering the idea, just a bit worried about how much your kids do wreck
We have a 4 bed farmhouse on the coast in East Yorkshire, great for flat road cycling.

PS would ourdogs be welcome

I'm a Landlord, so 'house swaps' of a type are something I do all the time.

Re the background checking, there are several companies out there, who for a small consideration, will do exactly that. All legal and above board, they check family, employers, bank accounts, credit rating, passports an so on.
In the rental business anyone thay does not want to be checked, or comes up as a lier does not get to borrow quarter of a million quids worth of house.

So whilst in theory I'd be happy to swap homes with a stranger, I would do the check on them, and expect them to do the same back to me (actually I think it would be polite to suggest a mutual check.)

Over the years I've come across very few dodgy people as they get put off by the sort of questions that are asked, but I've certainly had a few attempts such as the Nigerian mobile phone scam, the Vietnamise very keen on indoor gardening, the Pakistani hot bed bunk house and most suprising were a group of Lawyers who passed all the checks until I phoned up their previous landlord who had no financial problem with them, however they had trashed the house with their regular late night parties.
