Get more quotes, phone your existing insurers and haggle.

Ours went down from £323 (coincidently the same as yours) last year to £308 this year, with the same insurer (MBNA).

To answer the thread title, no.

I have noticed these recent years that more insurers are requiring a professionally installed and monitored alarm system and will heavily load quotes for those that don't have them.

I got my renewal quote yesterday and after a few years of the same insurer being very reasonable with almost no change year on year, they have suddenly ramped ours from £304 to £394. No change of circumstances and no claims in the last year.

I shall be shopping around.

Puzzle game procrastinator!
Ours went down (buildings) - contents will be up at some point soon though.
I live in rented accommodation now so I don't insure the building, and therefore can't answer @Dave7's question, but (cheeky diversion)...

Any recommendations for good contents insurance to cover bikes and tech kit in the home and when travelling, and (preferably) also legal and medical cover for leisure cycling?

I realised last week that my home buildings and contents insurance had been cancelled 2 years ago and I never renewed  Oooops, now back with MBNA, about £350, paid monthly. Thankfully my house didn't catch fire or similar!! All bikes are named (think they cover up to £1000 or £1500 as standard)
My mum had also buried her renewal so that has also expired 2 weeks ago as auto-renewal was off... so another call to MBNA (they kindly reinstated!) Hers had actually gone down by £6, no changes  (assisted living rental so contents only)
MBNA are Lloyds by another name

Ours went up by about 10% with Direct Line but I called them to tell them I'd paid off the mortgage and they reduced it by about 10%.

We had a fire a few years ago which caused us to be out of the house for about 6 months which cost 10s of thousands of pounds. When that happens you realise that the insurance firm is nothing much more than a sales and marketing front and what you're actually paying for is a loss adjuster. After I called the claim in, whilst the fire engine was still outside, we barely heard from direct line; the loss adjusters were great but it largely depends on the parameters they're working within.

Come renewal I was expecting Direct Line to start recovering their losses but the premium actually went down to reflect that the house was more much more fire proof.

One of the above comments made me check with my bank TSB and yes they do home/contents insurance.
I tried the site but its temporarily out of action. I will try again tomorrow.
