This probably won't help you much but here goes. I've been to Blankenberge a couple of times on beer trips, ok, maybe not great for a young family! I do remember however that the tram from Ostende passed by a few small towns South of Blankenberge where there were some lovely looking beaches and sand dunes. Sorry to be so vague but the beer and advancing age has taken it's toll but I'm sure you could pinpoint the towns on a map.

I quite like Blankenberge when I was there but it's about 20 years ago since I was last there. I seem to remember a little bit of a pier and sandy beaches. As Durian says there are quite a few stops on the coastal tram that look nice. Maybe worth staying in Ostend and then exploring?

Some years ago we cycled from France to Holland, I think we did the Belgian section in one day, the entire coast is only about 50 miles in length.
I seem to remember it was built up ribbon development the entire way with sand dunes behind and a beach in front.

Plopsaland at de Panne is popular with my kids.

Plopsaland sounds great.

I already want to go because of it's name.
