Thoughts welcomed on this...

I recently ordered a folding bike from a reputable on-line retailer (who has several 'real world' stores that I think are well regarded). However they've ended up sending two bikes instead of one!

I've no problem with returning one of the bikes as it was an error on their part and I've definitely not been charged twice. However, how reasonable should I be in terms of the logistics for returning it? Their opening suggestion was for me to wait for a courier to be pick it up - on a weekday sometime between 8am and 5pm. They seemed a bit surprised when I said that wasn't convenient for me given I work full-time. Their Plan B was for me to take it back to the courier depot - requiring a taxi (at my cost?) and waste at least 1 1/2 hours of my time at the weekend. Again, they seemed surprised that I wasn't overly keen on this.

Am I being unreasonable? Are they expecting too much?

Cheers,
S

No, they should do the legwork and at a time convenient to you.

no, you're not being unreasonable at all. Their bike, their mistake, their loss had you not told them. Tell them a time whn you are free, and ask them to collect then. If they can't, you keep. Mind you, I've had abeer after work, so I'm feeling a bit feisty!

What the others said, but why not (if you work in an office or other site with a receptionist) take it into work and ask them to collect from there?

That would only work if he doesn't cycle to work;)

Contact their MD, explain the situation to him, and ask him how he thinks the problem should be solved!

Bingo! That's what I'd do.

As already suggested, can you take it to work for pick-up?

Probably not - the OP quoted needing a taxi to get it to a depot. Depends if work is within public transport distance.

Most couriers will do Sat pickups, at COST.....

If it's a Dahon Cadenza and you got it from the same place as me keep hold of them, when the first one falls to bits it will save you the hassle of trying to get them to answer the phone.

Tell them the times that are convenient for you. If they really want it back they'll get it done.

How far away is their nearest store? perhaps they could pay for a taxi to get it there on a saturday.

They should collect at a reasonable time that suits you. Something like between 01:29 and 01:30 hrs would be deemed unreasonable for example.

Something tells me that if a company fails to collect their returned goods from you then you get to keep it.
I seem to remember something along these lines regarding small mail order items that are on trial for sale or return. If you are not happy and they fail to collect it then you get to keep it without paying. The same may apply.
