2 years ago I bought a Hoover from Argos, it was their own brand one, which I discovered later meant only Argos Value bags fitted it - No problem I thinks.
Until end of last yaer when I realise I have no bags left & go to Argos, I bought a pack of their Value bags, but found on getting them home they didn't fit - the hole with the rubber seal on it was about 2mm to big! I checked their website & saw that the 'Value' hoover had changed slightly, I went back to the store & was told that they had been stocking that model for about a couple of months - since new catologue came out & that their had obviosly been a design change..They did not have any of the old stock of bags left, and after contacting 4 local stores was told nowhere had any.
I tried numerous stores but found nowhere that stocked bags that fit my hoover - I was not amused, I had a perfectly good hoover that was less then 18months old, worked perefectly well, but was actulay useless without the bags. I complained to Argos, they apologised, and gracioulsy offered me 25% off the price of a new hoover, as a matter of principal I declined their offer - If I had to buy a hoover, discount or not I wasn't going to give them anymore of my money.
I bought a new bagless hoover from Currys, again their own brand model. It was a fabulous hoover, really powerful & the extension hose was actualy long enough to get all the way to the to of my stairs..It was fabulous for all of 2 months til #2 snapped the connector at the bottom where the extension slotted back into the base! I managed to fix it with a strip of card & super glue, but it meant I could no longer use the extension, whcih I needed for my stairs & to get into the many corners behind furniture.
So I figured I buy a new one, it hadn't been that expensive & it was a great hoover.
I've been using that one ever since...Until today.
I managed to suck up a piece of lego which blocked the pipe where it enters the cyclinder, so had to take it all apart - covering my living room carpet in the process (I would have gone outside but it was chucking it down) But never mind i'll hoover it all back up in a minute, only when i switched the thing back on the belt snapped - Deep breaths, count to 10 & chuck my bubbas into the car & shoot off upto Currys.
After wandering up & down the hoover aisle for several minutes & not being able to spot my hoover or find any belts I caught the eye of a shop chapy, who informed me they are no longer stocking that model & only carry spares to models they stock, but I can still order parts for it off their website - Great, don't exactly help with my very diusty dirty floor today does it? I asked, he sort of shrugged.
Once home I log onto their website.. Guess what? Type in the model name/number - NADA!! The only two Carlton products they show are a toaster & a kettle.
I am serioulsy not happy, if they don't stock the hoover/belts anymore & I can't get a belt that will fit from anywhere else, am I looking at having to buy hoover number 4....????

you could try ebay for a replacement belt... lots of ex-stock available. Also, as long as the belt is pretty much the same size, it doesn't have to be model specific.

I compared the belts Currys had in the shop, one was too wide, the other too long. There's a Sainsburys, B&Q, and Argos, all on the same estate.. tried all 3 none of theirs match, tried Asda & Tesco too...same story!
Have looked on Ebay, nothing that comes up under Carlton..and when i was trying to get bags to fit my old hoover I bought 4 different types off Ebay that should have fit but didn't then had to go through the whole, return/refund crap...TBH don't know if I can be bothered with all that again.
I am going to phone the number on the website moro, when they open & see what they suggest, In the mean time I am waiting for a friedn to arrive with her hoover so can claer up the mess in the living room

I swear that they must periodically bring out a new model of whatever-product, not because it's better, but because they can change all the dimensions a little bit, stop making the old parts, and screw all of us for more money ...

Have you got a good old fashioned hardware/electrical shop anywhere you?

They are more likely to have all sorts of odd sizes of belt....

Failing that, can you use old tights like they used to do on cars? ;)

What sort of belt is it?

Can you post a photo and maybe some dimensions?

They are usuallu round rubber like a giant O ring or a toothed rubber belt. If a toothed belt then the width, the pitch (distance between two teeth) adn the number teeth could get you a replacement from a belt supplier.

We've got a couple of those in the village, neither could help with the bags last year - they stock all the main maufacturers or ones that are compatable, but shops own brand items are not included, i'm keepinf my fingers crossed that belts are bit more generic then bags LOL!
But am agreeing with XmisterIs...I thnk it's a conspiracy

On the other hand, before you buy another shop brand vacuum, it may be worth the time to get something that lasts, like a Henry. I have four (or is it five) Henrys in the house and they all have worked been abused for years with no problem.

I have adapted bags in the past, too. If, like your Argos vacuum, the bag seal is too big then wrapping the spigot with gaffer (Duct/Duck) tape or electrical insulation tape can increase the diameter so the seal on the new bags fits better.

Prior to buying the Argos one I had a Dyson for downstairs & a Henry upstairs - My ex took the Henry, Then I moved & had wooden floors so sold the Dyson - was only when moved here 2 yaers ago realised needed a hoover again & was low on funds so bought cheap!

I did try that, it kept popping off, or I put too much tape on & it wouldn't fit - I'm not the most patient of people at dealing with silly things!

Have got to say I agree. There are certain products which I would tend to buy a big recognised brand for, and Hoovers* are one of them. Our Dyson has survived for seven years, and yes the occasional bit has broken (though in our case it was due to heavy handedness and not wear and tear) and finding replacement parts was a doddle.

*the irony isn't lost

I've been through Dysons, and various others, all did a year or two, when taken to tip, loads of others similar. Went to a specialist shop and got a mercedes, not a jot of a problem in 7 years.

You can't have bought a Hoover if it was an own brand, Hoover is a brand name and will have 'Hoover' marked on it
