Have you got a good old fashioned hardware/electrical shop anywhere you?

They are more likely to have all sorts of odd sizes of belt....

Failing that, can you use old tights like they used to do on cars? ;)

Just what I was going to suggest.

I've had a Miele for quite a few years....probably 10+ I think - maybe it lasts cos I treat it nicely (that's a polite way of saying I hate housework  )

And breeeeeeathe.... Poor you - sometimes life is SO against you.

Another vote here for Miele! Have had mine (a dog & cat one for all the pesky cat hairs my cat/s like to leave on every surface going) for about 8 years now. I looked around for a really good deal when I bought it and am really mean and cut open the bag, empty it and retape it for another few goes. Also bought some bags from eBay and got sent double quantity in error (yeah!) so am eking them out and try not to vacuum too often.

My motto is life's too short to do housework except when its raining and I am REALLY bored with nothing else to do - which doesn't happen often

So is your next vacuum cleaner going to be a "value" one, or have you learned some kind of lesson??

It does suck that Curry's only stock parts for their current stock, which in comparison to older stock is less likely to need repairing.

My parents have a Miele, and it's a thing of beauty; it's totally non-descript but is superbly engineered, and works like a dream after 10 years.

2 years ago I bought a Hoover from Argos, it was their own brand one, which I discovered later meant only Argos Value bags fitted it - No problem I thinks.
Until end of last yaer when I realise I have no bags left & go to Argos, I bought a pack of their Value bags, but found on getting them home they didn't fit - the hole with the rubber seal on it was about 2mm to big! I checked their website & saw that the 'Value' hoover had changed slightly, I went back to the store & was told that they had been stocking that model for about a couple of months - since new catologue came out & that their had obviosly been a design change..They did not have any of the old stock of bags left, and after contacting 4 local stores was told nowhere had any.
I tried numerous stores but found nowhere that stocked bags that fit my hoover - I was not amused, I had a perfectly good hoover that was less then 18months old, worked perefectly well, but was actulay useless without the bags. I complained to Argos, they apologised, and gracioulsy offered me 25% off the price of a new hoover, as a matter of principal I declined their offer - If I had to buy a hoover, discount or not I wasn't going to give them anymore of my money.
I bought a new bagless hoover from Currys, again their own brand model. It was a fabulous hoover, really powerful & the extension hose was actualy long enough to get all the way to the to of my stairs..It was fabulous for all of 2 months til #2 snapped the connector at the bottom where the extension slotted back into the base! I managed to fix it with a strip of card & super glue, but it meant I could no longer use the extension, whcih I needed for my stairs & to get into the many corners behind furniture.
So I figured I buy a new one, it hadn't been that expensive & it was a great hoover.
I've been using that one ever since...Until today.
I managed to suck up a piece of lego which blocked the pipe where it enters the cyclinder, so had to take it all apart - covering my living room carpet in the process (I would have gone outside but it was chucking it down) But never mind i'll hoover it all back up in a minute, only when i switched the thing back on the belt snapped - Deep breaths, count to 10 & chuck my bubbas into the car & shoot off upto Currys.
After wandering up & down the hoover aisle for several minutes & not being able to spot my hoover or find any belts I caught the eye of a shop chapy, who informed me they are no longer stocking that model & only carry spares to models they stock, but I can still order parts for it off their website - Great, don't exactly help with my very diusty dirty floor today does it? I asked, he sort of shrugged.
Once home I log onto their website.. Guess what? Type in the model name/number - NADA!! The only two Carlton products they show are a toaster & a kettle.
I am serioulsy not happy, if they don't stock the hoover/belts anymore & I can't get a belt that will fit from anywhere else, am I looking at having to buy hoover number 4....????

That sucks

I'm thinking of wooden floors again

May I suggest one of these and a mop?

Save yourself money in the long term and get a Dyson.

We have a henry at work

it'd be easier to list the things he doesn't suck up instead of what we actually do use him for

needless to say we have a hetty (pink one as wife fancied it) at home which I don't expect to replace

might be a repair or two at some point, but thats fine.

Miele (as with all their product ranges) design a product to a spec, then add the price. Pretty much all other manufacturers will design/build to a price.
The plain design of Miele appliances is deliberate so when the product is still working 8,9,10 years later, it doesn't look terribly dated.
Henry, Hetty etc... very solid machines that, through simple build and solid construction do exactly what they say on the tin (which is a good thing). Storing one is a challenge!

If you go around the carboots you can find perfectly good working vacuum cleaners for less than £5. You can even find old working Dysons for about £20. The old Electolux 500, 550 502s etc were very good and could pick them up for £3.00 and even the old Hoover Juniors are still very good cleaners and still a lot of them about. With those you could dismantle the motors and replace the bearings brushes and they would last for 20 years.
With a lot of the cheap cleaners the plastic is very thin and things like the wheels and hoses will break.

If you ever get a dyson, make sure you take out the extended cover. Ours has been great, but we've been replacing parts (under the extended cover) almost every year - it does however have a hard life.

+1 for the Henry, half a bag of wood tacks, tiling grout and various other things have been neatly disposed of with mine in the last 6 years and it has never even paused for breath.

I guess there is a reason that pretty much every work place has got one.

Henrys don't even need bags. I've never used one.

One of mine has also fallen down two flights of stairs in my house while it was working and it just carried on. I had to chase it down the stairs to fetch it back up again.
