I sometimes do the opposite. Turn up at the checkout, get offered the quick route but politely decline. They've queued, started unloading their shopping, it would be unfair even though freely offered to queue jump.
Also at a crowded bar, the staff will usually be quite good at remembering who was next but occasionally miss a place. I've found that if they are looking a little bit confused rather than shouting "Over here, I'm next" which will often result in you being ignored, shouting "Excuse me, this bloke/lady (with a point to the person next to you) is next" results in them getting served, you getting a thank you and you being served straight after them. This works even if you've just arrived at the bar.
