Blimey... they saw you coming. I've never spent more than a few quid.

Weeping fig is easy to grow, as they do a lot of leaf dropping before they die, so you can tell you are doing something wrong, well before it dies. They can go down to a couple of leaves only, and still recover. Good learner plant to judge your green fingerdness.
Streptocarpus can handle low light - we have one very happy one in the bathroom behind frosted glass.
Yukka plants can handle poor watering, but don't like the dark at all, so not North facing window, but West should be fine.

Or go for something like a rosemary, and have it as an indoor herb plant too?

Thirty years ago,i moved into a high rise flat.Today it would be called an apartment. This was after my divorce. So i got kitted out and people bought me little gifts. One women was going to throw out a scrappy rubber plant.Well i was quite taken by it,i had a sort of affinity to it.Like me it was not wanted.
So i took it in.I named it George.Replanted it new plantpot and better soil/compost.Got some leaf cleaner food stuff and fed it baby bio now and again.I talked to it.Well it grew and grew.So much so i had to buy a humungous plant pot.I even had to tie it to a frame i made out of bamboo. It grew strong and loved the light my flat was bathed in.
Sadly george was not allowed to travel to my new home when i met and married Mrs Postman twenty seven years ago.I abandoned him at the bin collection point in the ten storey flats i lived in.I left a friend behind, what a cad.I hope someone took him in and he had a long and happy life.

That reminds me of the plant on the eye ward at Burnley hospital. Every time i went for an appointment i'd end up watering this plant as it was always bone dry. When my appointments ended a nurse asked if i wanted to take the plant home with me. I said no thanks and left. I wished after i'd taken it, as i knew it'd be neglected.
