How are mobile phone masts powered?

They have a power source from the main supply, and usually a back up, from another circuit of the main supply. So when there were floods in an area I got a call from a woman very upset because she could reach her husband on his mobile. He was checking on his boat in the flooded area. So the area was under water and the masts were down. End of any chance for hubby's phone to work.

it's a secret breed of giant hamsters, sponsored by the government, large corporations and the lizard-intelligentsia, running about on giant wheels below the ground, fed on the waste from supermarkets that 'freegans' don't manage to get their hands on. The oft-reported 'hum' that people hear, is in fact the turning of the giant hamster wheels. Possibly. I reckon. Or at least a bloke down the pub told me so. Or maybe I dreamt it.
