How British are you?

It means you were made to learn loads of pointless dross by someone who hasn't worked out what it means to be British themselves.

Spot on. I have seen so e of the tests and there were inane questions like "what would you ask for in a pub?", correct answer being "a pint". There was even a question on East Enders ffs ! Even the "sensible" questions were things like "how many MPs are there"

A good question would be "How many Scottish Labour MPs are there?" Followed by "hahahaha, traitor scum"

I have a British passport, but all this national/regional identity business is a load of old bollocks and gets in the way of progress and advancement if you ask me.

I'm discovering more about where I came from all the time as my folks keep up the family tree research. Right now, it seems that on my mother's side, I'm 1/4 Highland Scots, which probably means Irish and a bit of Norse if you go back further, and then the other 1/4 is Welsh with some French Huguenot (which probably means Jewish at some point before that); then on my father's side, I'm 1/8 Lancashire and 1/8 Irish, and the other 1/4 is East European Jewish with a bit of Suffolk.

Added to this, my wife is Japanese, and my son is Canadian, Japanese and British (*see above).

I am not limiting myself, I am making a point about where other people come from, and how much it doesn't matter.

I was born in Britain, so I guess that makes me more British than anything else (ok my grandfather was German, Jewish and determined that Britain was perhaps a safer place to be than Erfurt...unfortunately, the rest of that side of the family weren't so lucky  I never met him, he died while my mum was in her teens)

Identity matters hugely to me. I see myself as being Scottish and European and I hate the little Englander weltanschauung that some have.

What about the 'little Scottisher' element?

I have discovered my ancestors were from Germany/Prussia/Silesia, also, but I'm not sure Jewish as well. Mrs Colly is part Norwegian, part Roma, and definitely part Suvern Softy

So, to those who voted out of Europe,

Point of order: We voted to leave the EU. You may not have realised it but the EU is not, was not, and never has been 'Europe' :okay:

I wonder if you saw someone's made up set of question. Back when I did it, there was nothing about pub culture, nothing about TV, nothing about any individual (except the Queen, and she was there as Monarch not as a person). It was a fine set of question to see that you understood how British democracy worked, how the bureaucracy (should) work, and how society functioned. Yes, there were specific questions about the make up of each chamber of Government, but it doesn't seem crazy to understand that at least briefly.

There were only about 48 hours in my life when I could tell you about the number of members of the Northern Ireland Assembly, but I suspect that is longer than most brits have held onto this fact.

EU stands for European Union, which means a union of European countries so when the UK leaves the EU, it will not be part of the Union, hence Europe. This is also what many of the people I spoke to when I was in France last week, think too.
Their view is that GB will be on its own and will find it hard to deal with Europe.

btw, the only reason I had to sit a test and swear an oath was due to sexism. As my maternal Grandfather was British, my cousins born to his sons are eligible for citizenship, but mothers couldn't pass their citizenship to their offspring if they were born before (I think) 1985.
