How can Donhou charge £2300 for an off the shelf 853 frame?

Donhou does have London overheads, exhibition stands, an appealing web site, very flowery sales speak which looks bought in from a marketing wallah, demo bikes for the press....all these are very costly for a small frame builder. Good luck to him. I just wouldn't choose to subsidise his expenditure.

I agree with the watch thing. We are talking about status symbols, in effect - rather than useful timepieces - which is what the Donhou frame (made of 'special' 853 tubing) will end up being, if it isn't already. More trophy than bike.
Thought you'd left?

Any bike that costs more than a BSO from a supermarket decent entry level bike is a status symbol. A trophy. Otherwise everyone would rip the frame decals off as soon as they take delivery, and no one would sell the top end models.

So you think adding disc brakes to a road bike is a trivial matter like adding a bottle cage mount or cable stop? Good luck with that.

Do you really think the differentiator in price from one frame to another is its braze on's and how the tubes are joined together? Tis a wonder someone hasn't spotted the gap in the market and exploited it.
Yawn,

I don't think anyone, bar his marketing bod, is asking you to. Presumably you've joined a co-op, or some such, and build your own frames and forge your own components thus avoiding all that ghastly capitalism and attendant profit.

No I'm still around and responding only to intelligent comments. I love how you talk in absolutes all the time.

Upon reflection I think the Rapha comparison is wide of the mark, because some (not all) Rapha products are so superior in design and construction. I think a better analogy is luxury watches. They often have the same off the shelf movement but huge variations in price because the branding people have spunked a ton of money up the wall on bribes to celebrities and sportspeople.
out of interest which luxury brands are you claiming use the same OTS movements?

He's also wrong about Rolex' watches, good investments ours have gone up in value.

Nobody said they weren't good investments. I sold my 15 year old Speedmaster for more than I paid for it.
