well i am 49 and just bought myself a motorbike . not sure its a crisis's its just that i can now afford it and if i do die on it the kids are old enough to cope hopefully
To be honest, I wanted (still want) a motorbike, but as a compromise went for the convertible mini instead.

I'm tending towards the @Tin Pot perspective as I think mid-life crises are an on-going process rather than a one off event, and I take crisis in the Greek meaning, a decision or decision point.

So, in roughly chronological order from the mid-90s, my mid-life decisions have been

Buying an mtb
Buying a Laverda Jota
Quitting my job '99
Learning to play electric bass well enough to play paid gigs
Starting a band
Buying various basses on an n+1 basis
Quitting my job '05
Buying a road bike
Taking up rugby refereeing
Quitting the band
Buying several more bikes
Quitting my job '14
Burying the Aged P
Taking a temporary role in Scandinavia

I'd like a SAAB convertible, or a Triumph TR8 or even a GT6 or, or, or, but I don't have a garage or a driveway.
According to the Bible, you're supposed to live for threescore years and ten, so it's 35.
How old do you have to be to have a mid-life crisis?

I don't feel the need to buy a Porsche or start playing golf but at 36 I find myself increasingly questioning what I have actually acheived in life - permanently single, not many friends, not much in the bank account, a job I hate, family that mostly don't speak to me and an increasing realisation that I should make major changes or be like this forever but lacking the self confidence and motivation to actually make the changes I would like to make.

As a young person of only 36, you are in an ideal position to change the job you hate - single is a bonus, you only have to consider yourself. If you don't have much money, then you are not wrenching yourself away from a lavish lifestyle in order to make changes - another bonus.
Most people who are stuck in jobs they hate are there because of other people's expectations and having to pay for the small people they made!
Seize life - if others call it a midlife crisis, don't listen!

I had my mid-life crisis in my 20s , which I think is an ideal time to do it. It included, travel, Porsches, silly partying and doing too many risky things. Now I am older, I have the knowledge and time to appreciate the things that really matter in life. Having said that, I am looking forward to a second mid life crisis in a few years.

Took up cycling again, properly, at 46. Learned guitar and bought a Stratocaster at 49. At 51 I lost 3 stone and took better control of my life.
I did have a sports car at 45 but I have had them on and off throughout my life so not sure that the MX5 counts.
I have now, just about stopped doing the job that I have done for decades and wondering what to do now. The guitar school job will do for the time being.
