Fumbling.

I bet some of them translate as 'not here', 'nope, you've not found it yet', 'getting warmer'....

they don't. They accept that the majority of Braille sign-age is put up by sighted people who simply want to put a tick in a box of some dumb accessibility audit.

There are guidelines, such as those from RNIB, but hardly anyone seems to follow them because the signs are nearly always an after thought added after the fit out is complete.

(I work for a charity for the blind btw)

There is a ward on a hospital that is local to me that have put braille notices behind glass.

This week I had to audit all the things in the building I work in that we have for disabled access and as I added the braille signs to the list I was wondering exactly this!

This audit thing is the same reason why local authorities paint cycle lanes in stupid places.

How on earth do they know where the signs are?

After a while they get a feel for it.

Did you notice any consistency in where the signs were placed I wonder?

One hospital I visited last week had a corridor with tactile signage in it. The signs were hanging from the ceiling FFS! But I then though it was probably cheaper/easier just to get all sign done with braille on even if no one will ever read it.

My Mother attends Moorfields Eye Hospital in London for regular outpatients appointments. People attend from all over the country and often arrive on trains having no idea where to go. The route is carefully marked from Old Street station by a coloured line on the ground all the way to the main doors of the hospital. She has always wondered in the years she has been attending why the pavements are so bad around the hospital. I've accompanied her a few times and the route goes straight through potholes, over uneven paving stones etc.

I was just going to post that someone I know once saw signs with braille at an exhibition centre - 20 feet up in the air...
