Thanks very much Mr tight git I'll have a look at the said app.

O.k tight git I thought you needed phone coverage to use google maps ! I'll get myself lost in the back of beyond and give it a try without a signal.

It's always nice to be able to confirm your possition when you are unsure.

Thanks again

You wont get the map without a data connection, but you should get the gps coordinates on a blank white map.

There's also an option to save an area of the map for offline viewing, which means you can select quite a large area at home, download it over wifi and it saves the maps onto your sd card so when you're in the middle of nowhere you can view the maps with gps and no data

Zoom out the map to roughly the area you want to save (can be quite large like 30*30 miles or something), hit the menu button, "make available offline", select the area of map you want to save for your cycle rides, then it should download it and youll be able to find it later either by hitting the maps button top left, going to favourites and then the offline maps tab, or i think hitting the 3 layer icon bottom right and choosing "my maps". It wont use data and will still show you where you are on the map from gps. That should be right, i can check properly if its not ;)

Alternatively I find "Maps With Me" is a great off-line mapping app. You download whole countries at a time, so you won't get caught in a location you don't have maps for. The only downside is that it takes up a bit of storage space.

For getting co-ordinates just download a generic GPS app. Almost all of them tell you your co-ordinates as long as you have your GPS enabled.

If you look on the Google Play site there's an App that gives you the OS Grid Ref for where you are.

It OBVIOUSLY needs to have either a phone signal (it triangulates on several phone masts ...and is reasonably accurate) or running the GPS on the phone (and equally obviously, you'll need to be outside for the GPS - the phone signal derived GR will work in a building)

Simple really ....
