How do retired people pay their rent?

Does anyone know how the Continentals deal with this? Are most of the rented properties over there Government run (I.e. council houses) or privately owned.

It seems to me that the demise of council houses, where rent is set at a reasonable level, must be contributing to this problem?

Greed is the main problem, we always want more for less

This is the BBC's take on a recent report on housing. Basically the number of renters into retirement could be a third, number of renters increase dramatically.

Two early entries for ‘Daftest Post of the Day’...

State provision is minimal (and getting worse). Pensions are not gambles any more than life itself is.

So a lot of my older friends who lost over 40% of their pot were lying ?
These were private pension btw

My mother who was a sheltered housing council warden for over 30 years always said " if you retire with nothing you'll be ok, them with any money get fleeced.

Nothing daft about their clams at all Reg its just true

It has always been my theory that Thatcher’s hidden agenda in selling off council housing for in some cases washers was to provide something to confiscate when you got old and all the savings had gone. If your mortgage is paid you and any dependents lose the lot. Renting I think you get assistance so could be better off renting.

The retired residents who pay full rent in that sheltered accomodation place i was in are resentful of those who don't. They'll say stuff like "we worked all our lives and then we had to sell our homes to come in here and pay £90 a week, while he/she hasn't worked hardly and didn't have a home to sell, gets their rent for free"! My mum and dad worked all their lives and saved up, but when my mum needed 24 hour care in a home the house that was her's and my late dad's was taken to pay for her care in that home. Yes,i'd say you're not much better off owning your own home. Unless you've had a fantastic income where you've bought an expensive house and been able to build up a huge pension, you're likely to see your home and meage pension disappear to pay for your elderly care. Having said that, a bloke i know who's family had a cycle shop and made a fair bit of money out of it saw his mum's expensive home and big pension pot disappear over the years,as she lived in a home for over 20 years up to her death, which he said cost about the combined sum of her home and her pension. He said that without wanting to sound terrible, she just lived too long for him and his brother and sister to be left anything in her will.

I was thinking the other day back to when I bought my first house - would have been in my 20s before married etc. The thing that struck me thinking back now is that all my friends of a similar age had thier own property - nothing flash you know one bed starter or inner city terrace. It was just considered the normal thing to do when you left college or university and got a job. None of us were rich - just starting out not paid a great deal - owned an old car as well in most cases. Looking at my kids and thinking how things have changed - university debt and may never own thier own home.

My parents were born before or during ww2. They came from working class background and were the first in thier family history to buy thier own property - in the south east - while doing fairly low paid jobs. Imposible now. My wife's family ditto although in the midlands.

My parents worked hard all thier life, now in thier 80s, both got pensions and money in the bank from downsizing thier property. Luckily not had to go in a care home. Works for some people but as with everything in life a lot of luck is involved.

Petsonally glad I have my own modest property and mortgage paid when I retire - one less thing to worry about.

One of the worst positions to be in financially is in "the middle".

If you are very wealthy ok. If you have not got a bean ok too.FREE rent, Ctax, glasses, dental, scripts and pension credit when you retire. Free funeral too-no one has been left on top.If you borrow money and don't pay it back there is nothing anyone can do.

If you are in the middle-own your modest home and some savings-you are gonna get screwed. You will pay for everything. The state give you nothing even though you have worked and saved all your life. You will pay if you go into a care home. You will pay for your funeral.

These are the rules people.

For the record I am in the middle getting screwed.

How can they make you pay for your own funeral? You can leave me rotting in the street as far as I'm concerned, somebody will come and clean it up sooner or later. Or is that littering?

I don't know were you get all these “free things” from, I've been living off the state since I was 38 and I don't get FREE rent, Ctax, glasses, dental, scripts and pension credit.

Yes I do get help with housing benefit and council tax, but I still have to find £250 per month for rent and council tax, I get some money off my glasses with an HT1, but people even with their own home can get that, and as for free funeral if you have the money why not, I have a pre-paid one paid by myself monthly, you could do that if I can.

Think yourself lucky that you were able to buy your own home “and in the middle”, I didn't ask to become disabled, I went to work quite happy that day, but came home 6 months later from the hospital to find I had nothing.

Retirement scares the hell out of me and i have a house that will be paid for
This is my biggest concern I have & is causing me anxiety although the sensible head head says we'll be fine, the nagging doubt head won't listen
