It's true, mirrors do let you look more often, and for longer than you can on a non-mirror-equipped upright. Few bikes have mirrors as good as those on my Fujin - they work much better than those of a car since they're closer to me, and closer to my normal sightline down the road. Little or no vibration too.
OTOH I don't miss the mirrors when riding my upright, and I love the extra communication you get with drivers by actually turning round towards them.
