How do you tell if someone is tailgating you?

It's true, mirrors do let you look more often, and for longer than you can on a non-mirror-equipped upright. Few bikes have mirrors as good as those on my Fujin - they work much better than those of a car since they're closer to me, and closer to my normal sightline down the road. Little or no vibration too.

OTOH I don't miss the mirrors when riding my upright, and I love the extra communication you get with drivers by actually turning round towards them.

If you're being tailgated and you are unaware of it, you probably need to peep to the rear more often.

On a similar theme, I find myself mildly irked (but not angered) by the following common event:

A car overtakes you in a 30 when you're doing 25. The driver has limited control of the throttle and gears, so uses the footbrake to slow down to 30 after his or her spurt of speed.

This limits the gap in front of you and alarms the following driver, who is also passing. The following driver therefore passes and immediately brakes to slot into the tiny gap.

The gap grows very little before a third driver comes by and does the same thing.

The next six verses are the same as the last one, until you get to some NSL road and everyone zhooshes away in a happy swirl of exhaust gases.

This is not as dangerous as tailgating, but it irks me more. It has irked me just to type this.

I will go and drink something now.
