Purveyor of fine nonsense
One of my elderly neighbours a few doors away started banging and drilling loudly in his garage this morning at6.30am!!!!!

I noticed I wasn't the only one peering bleary-eyed out of the bedroom window trying to see who the hell was making that bloody racket!

Eventually, I heard someone shout, "For God's sake, Gerry, SHUT UP!!!". Thank Christ for that!

Is there a law that says you can't start banging or drilling before a certain time of day, because it wakes everyone up? (Just in case he does it again!).

Councils now have lots of powers at their disposal to tackle anti-social behaviour such as this. But unfortunately one isolated incident won't necessarily mean you can do very much where as a pattern of behaviour would be actionable. If you believe it is directed against you then you might make use of the Harassment Act 1997 but it would have to be a course of behaviour likely to cause alarm or distress. It has both criminal sanction and civil remedy. Otherwise there are the bog standard nuisance actions public or private. But the Council is probably the best route. If he continues they could install sound recording equipment, neighbours keep a diary, covert filming, noise abatement warnings and or a formal notice, seizure of this drill or tools.

Maybe worth having a chat with him as he might not have realised the early hour and that everyone including the lark was still asleep.

8 a.m. strikes me as reasonable. I usually start any noise at 9, as I can always find something quiet to do before that. All the neighbours keep chickens so if they do moan I'll just tell them about their cockerels (which in truth I hardly notice).

nothing wrong with 6.30. It shows willing. And decent folk are out of bed before that time.....

At weekends, I usually leave it till after 10.00am, even though we are usually up some time after 7am.... Never see any of our neighbours before 10am - I'm usually washing the car of something quiet - power gardening stuff comes out at 10.

Weekdays probably 8.30 if I'm off - most people are at work.

I'm not normally up before 10.30. But then I'm usually at work until 1am. So I'd be none too happy if some doddering old get decided to nail stuff together outside my house at 6.30am.

A neighbour once started cutting his lawn at 8.15, which I thought was out of order... personally I wouldn't start anything noisy till about 9am ;) (when i might wake the missus up with my tool use)
