I do between 6 and 13 miles every day as my work out for the day. The routes comprise a mixture of radients , flats and downhills. Is that enough to stay fit?
I dont stick to the same route all the time as I try to vary the terrain as my mood takes me.
How do you plan your route? Do you go in a group, doubles or solo?
I always go on my own as I dont know anybody in my age group ( 60) to go with.

Shame! Where are you?

I'm 55 and my regular buddy is the same age, we usually manage a ride a week families permitting. A Summer evening ride will be 20-30 fast miles and weekend day ride 30-50. One the fast evening rides we average about 16.8 mph and a little slower on longer rides. Not much of our ride is flat though! If my buddy isn't around I will do a short evening leg loosener over a local hill, around 12 miles and at weekends 20-50 miles usually much slower, around 14-15 mph average. Our evening rides are pretty competitive; we usually ride our goolies off trying to beat each other up and down the hills.

If I recall correctly, the medics usually say we need half an hour or more of sustained exercise a day to keep fit, so yes I'd say that's more than enough.

A lot of my rides are solo, but I also occasionally go on organised rides with the local cycle club or on sportives and audaxes. My commute I do alone as there's nobody else travels in from the same direction (not by bicycle anyway!).

I do either one of two local loops (13mi and 20.5mi) most days with maybe a 50 or 60 miler at the weekends. I usually do it alone. Cyclists of any age are few and far between in my area.

Most of my rides at the moment are from 15 - 25 miles. I try to vary routes a bit to keep my interest, but I don't have a huge amount of choice for that distance. As I get fitter, and can go further, I'll start to have more options. It's quite hilly where I live, but I do have one route that avoids the biggest hills. I'm trying to build up mileage to do some sponsored rides and raise money for a local charity, so I'll soon be going all sorts of places, I think.

I generally have an idea where and how far I'm going before I head out, but sometimes (today, for example, it's very hot and humid, so I decided to cut it short by a couple of miles) I make changes while I'm out. I ride on my own. My OH cycles as well, but is a lot fitter than me, and doesn't want to ride at my speed. I also don't know any english speaking cyclists around here, although I have been "picked up" by groups of spanish cyclists a couple of times, who seemed very friendly, even though we only spoke a few words of each other's languages.

What you're doing sounds like plenty to stay fit. I think the general recommendation is 30 minutes of aerobic type exercise (which cycling certainly qualifies as) 3 times a week. Since you're doing more than that, you're certainly doing better than the vast majority of people.

6 to 13 miles a day still adds up to 40 to 80 miles a week. Plenty enough to keep fit I should think.

I usually go out early morning a couple of times a week anything from 10 miles to 25 depending on how I am feeling, what the weather is like and if I need to be working early or not. Weekends I will usually get a ride in of between 30 and 60 miles again depending on how I feel. The occasional long ride too of up to 100 miles.
For years I always rode alone. It was only a couple of years ago when I joined this site I began to ride with others. It is a different experience riding with others, one which I enjoy.

Where abouts are you? If you fancy the idea of a ride with others you might find something you could link up to in
the Informal Rides section. Even if you just joined for part of the ride.

If I'm feeling OK my shortest ride is 24 miles and the longest is 31 miles it is a circular hilly route mostly on country lanes and always ride on my own as most will feel that I ride too slowly for them, my average is only 12 mph.
In the summer I will do longer rides in the New Forest say up to 50miles +, but as yet I haven't done any long rides this year due to sciatica pain.
ps I'm nearly 60

Personally, I do roughly 5 miles per day in city traffic, and *try* a gentle 20 miles or so on my days off (though I have done 50+ before now)

In that case I can give up cycling I spend more than half an hour a day running away from the wife with her rolling pin

Usually 10-12 miles early morning before work mid week, then a longer ride (not normally more than 20 miles) at the weekend if family allows. I wish I had time for more, but with a 2 yo and a month old, it's not really possible. I'm considering changing jobs to desk bound rather than field, as I could then commute and get my fix that way instead (and I'd up the milage in the process).

Usually between 20 and 30 miles 3 times a week, and a longer weekend ride of between 35 and 60 miles depending on weather, mood and who's organised it, and how many hills are in it
