How far would you push?

Given the return of the snow, how far would you be prepared to get off and regularly (every day for a week maybe) push your bike before you thought it wasn't worth it? I reckon half a mile each end of my commute would be about my limit. Beyond that and I'm spending longer walking than cycling.

Would it not depend on how far you had to go - the more miles you were doing the half mile would become less significant. Me I like the bike so would be prepared to push it knowing I could get on further in my journey.

When it's been icy, and I know the main roads are OK I've got about 1/2 mile walk to the main road. If it's dicey I'll take the car (or bus).

Woke at 5am...looks fine out there, op by 7 - ah snowing....so drove in.

I pushed a mile this morning. Other option was to catch the train. No way. Pushing the bike on ice in cold and dark until reaching the A Roads was a pleasure in contrast.

Yep with you there, I did the same on Monday.

I was faster walking and pushing my bike this morning than the queue of traffic nose-to-tail, edging along in the snow!

All the snow this way dissapeared Monday afternoon :becool::biggrin:

The answer is to remove your back brake. I found this out accedentally the other day when forced to take my mountain bike to work. The problem is that I have no back brake so I have been relying 100% on my front brake which in these conditions you would consider highly stupid. (I'm not disputing that) But the funny thing is, I feel really safe when I'm riding. Its almost like not wearing a seat belt in your car while you have a massive foot long rusty spike pointing towards you from your steering wheel. It kind of forces you to be highly vigilant and careful and more controlled. I'm not suggesting that you disable your brakes or make the appropriate changes to your car but do you see what I mean?

(something tells me I'm falling off tonight)

Hmm might be about to find out as I got a lift in with the fold-up this morning, thinking I'd be able to cycle back....only a sprinkling of snowflakes outside my house, whne I got to the office I found foot-deep slush on top of some nice hard ice and a three-mile queue of cars! So I think about 5 miles of pushing......great
