How fast is your Broadband?

100+ mbps on Virgin here, I got 89mbps through wifi to my phone with their Superhub2..

With both kids streaming to their tablets there's plenty left for Netflix on the TV or internet browsing etc.

Don't begrudge paying £70 a month for the whole package as we watch plenty of TV as well (BT sport included).

Can't remember the last outage we had either, very reliable service.

Currently thinking about installing something to throttle the internet on my laptop down to 'worst case copper' speed to see how well iPlayer runs. And then perhaps (if I can get it to work and find my spare Pi and rustle up a hard drive from somewhere) running Squid as a caching proxy to see what difference that makes - I'm guessing almost none on iPlayer - but I've never tried anything remotely similar - but may be worth a try until we get fibre (scheduled for next year apparently)

I think you can get Virgin broadband and phone without TV (still £40/ month though?).

I wouldn't go back to broadband over phone line personally, can you get a speed estimate from a 3rd party website (NOT BT's own..).

I did a speed test and it reported average phone line broadband at 20mbps around here, but doesn't report outages..

I had 2 months of Virgin trying to deliver equipment and calls about arranging to install my system

They simply would not believe I had not ordered it

Eventually arranged an appointment with the Engineer, sat him down and showed him the email trail, calls and delivery cards

Took 5 mins for him to make a call and sort the error

We can't get Virgin. The cables were all installed on our road around the time our houses were built 20 years ago. Ours had all the trunking already in the pavement and to the house. Virgin wouldn't come back and dig a 10 foot long trench to link the new houses up and still won't.

6 mps on a good day 4 on a really rubbish day with bt unlimited. Costs me around £40.00 per month. Its rubbish, but i live in the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains and it is better than some people get.

Just done a speed test at home, and thought it was weird that it was almost exactly the same as at work - then it occurred to me that perhaps 20Mb/s was the limit of the wi-fi - I've got 55Mb/s at home currently if I connect via cable (which the downstairs Now box does)

We pay BT for unlimited "up to" 76mb/s, and for a long time we got somewhere near that, nearly all the time.

Then last year we started having issues with the connection dropping, having to reboot the hub, and the speed dropping to as low as 8mb/s.

BT eventually sent someone out who restored it to full speed (what we're paying for), but advised something needed doing to the box in the street. Next day two BT blokes had the box in the street open and we had no internet. Two hours later they were gone and the max speed was down to 50 mb/s again (and often a lot less).

To be honest I've been meaning to do something about it since, but life keeps getting in the way. Must try to ring them this week.

Two speed tests, done seconds apart:

First, using my ISP's speed checker (BT)

Then using the Google speed checker:

Hmmmmm.......the BT one reckons my connection is actually FASTER than my "up to" speed

Having being used to slooooooow copper all the way in the sticks my newish FTTC BT with home hub 6 is a joy. Ok it's about 35 mb/s but better than 2.5

I've just been on the phone to VM this morning after our broadband dropped out, AGAIN!
He's now apparently downloaded a new hamster or something to our hub thingy but I don't know exactly what due to the language barrier
Then he asked me to run a test on www.speedtest.net which came back with the result below
However, it's all Greek to me so can anyone tell me if this is regarded as OK
TBH it seems quicker since he's downloaded the new whatever it was, but time will tell if it's anymore reliable
