How fast is your Broadband?

Previously we were getting around .8mb/s and it was awful.

It would be better if you had typed that as '0.8' - I didn't spot the decimal point on my small phone screen and thought you were complaining about 8 Mb/s!

My Internet seemed really sluggish yesterday but a speed check showed the usual 10-15 Mb/s download speed and 0.75 Mb/s. Digging deeper revealed that my latency ('ping time') had gone up from 20-30 ms to 200+ ms. I don't know what caused it - the wifi connection was fine. Back to normal today, so I think it was a problem with the ISP.

Sky unlimited fibre for £20 a month, but we are quite far from the junction box. Still it's better than the 5Mbps we used to have.

I didn't think disctance from the cabinet was afftected with fibre as there is no noise increase like copper. Thought it was more down to traffic in your area, restrictions on band width and also the quality of connection from your street to the router.

Distance from the cabinet is a massive factor. In some areas people are so far from the cabinet that a service wasn't offered at all or a downgraded one. It's just everyone assumes that the cabinet is around the corner - it isn't in quite a few cases.

I love that the cabinet is over the road from my house, the cabinet is 200m from the Exchange, which I walk past to go to work, in a sizeable town in SE England and there is no fibre and the broadband speed is shocking poor at times.

I gave up reporting the crap signal to noise ratio years ago. The BT hub is on a timeswitch to restart it. If left on the speed gets slower and slower everyday until it becomes broadly unusable.

My bad as I was thinking of distance to the exchange rather than local green cabinet.

it's not fibre to my route, hence the copper connection has a big impact.
if your talking about cable providers,then i imagine there is more fibre and less copper

I (think that I) could hold my breath and walk to my local BT cabinet so I should get a fast connection when they link the fibre 'cable' up in the NY.

That is bonkers fast. I'm just shy of 50 atm, and I consider that pretty damn nippy. And you're at four times that and change? Well gosh.

The home I've just moved into in supplied by a company called Hyperoptic who offer home broadband at speeds up to 1Gb. As that's a bit OTT I've settled for 150Mb.

At home 220-240mb and about 18 up BUT I did this because I need some remote access for a few months. I was fairly happy with my Sky 5mb but I only ever got that in the middle of the night peak time there was awful traffic shaping. A Secondary BUT I like probably a lot on here I use wireless so it maxes out at around 22mb for most of the people in the house. I think the max on wireless is 50mb for an 11n, So I will downgrade when contract expires. If I get slowing down I will traffic shape my kids out of the network!

At work we a rural so straight after BT launched infinity here I ordered it, but was gutted when the engineer "installed" it he quipped tis only two cables put together, not true infinity - 20mb 5mb up

802.11n can operate at speeds up to 600mb. 802.11ac can reach up to 1300mb.

I could hit 200mb plus on Wifi with Virgin before I moved.
