It's that time of the year again.Dark days and early dark nights. And i have had a little bit of a downer on.It always happens ,but it picks up springtime.Being retired does not help i see no point in wandering around town trying to fill in time. And there is only so much ironing and cleaning one wants to do.i was pretty active up to last year then the knee began to swell and it was discovered too much activity made it swell. So i had to give up mums and toddlers group, refreshments team and gardening team from church.
But i still organize a retirement group from work and next weds is the next meeting.I think also missing the bike which is still in for repair, but the weather has been crap anyway.
So my best to all of us who struggle with this time of year. And i know some of you have it even harder, all the best to you .

I feel like crap, bad cold this week burning up and sometimes sweating when sitting still, getting better slowly.

It's been quite enjoyable cycling in the dark again, although just the morning commute at the moment.

The usual for this time of year - a feeling of impending doom! I always felt it at this time of year, but now I have the anniversaries of my dad dying on Bonfire Night and my mum dying at Christmas (plus other depressing stuff which I won't go into, but which is ongoing) to add to the seasonal joy ...

Murky, wet conditions put me off venturing out to do a ride today. I'm now trying to psych myself up to do the first gym bike session of the autumn, probably the first of many!

My SAD light box has been blasting away for a few days now and will probably be on every day until March.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

Postman, Would you consider a specific past time that allowed you an opportunity to get out and about whilst occupying your time when at home?

I'm dismissing the obvious ones like Golf but instead thinking of something different like refurbishing a old Motorcycle and getting out across the channel for tours of europe. Perhaps Build a caterham seven in your spare time (if the weather bothers you).

if they both sound a little too expensive (or a little too masculine) , how about something free, yet time consuming and rewarding like getting a dog.

It must be pretty tricky to find things to do that are interesting, fulfilling and keep you active, so I wish you the best and will keep thinking of some ideas...

Hope you can keep your spirits up.

How much cycling can your dodgy knee stand now postman? If you could manage 30-40 hilly miles, I'd gladly show you round some of my local routes and we could call in at a cafe somewhere. (You might be already familiar with them.)

I'm working from home so I can ride during the week if that suited you. Sometimes Calum brings his bike over on the train from Leeds and I'm sure he'd be happy to keep you company if you fancied that.

We could pick a nice day. The forecast 24 hours in advance is usually fairly reliable.

I have to say that i quite like this time of year, nights drawing in, cosy fire in the evenings.

After doing the FNRTTC, i am even looking forward to a few late evening rides in the dark.

a mate of mine suffers with SAD and i know how it affects people so you have my sympathy but i try to make the effort to get out and about while there is day light, even in the rain etc so hopefully that helps.

3 weeks of being under the weather, now it's night shift week so feel really tired on the way home on the bike. The weather has been awful, and it's nearly Christmas

Apart from that it's great, I actually quite like winter time, I like to be out and about with the right clothing to stay warm and dry, work shifts so used to not seeing a lot of daylight anyway

It kicks in for me when both commutes are in darkness. The only daylight hours being robbed from you while your at work looking out of the window.

I can see how that would affect some people, I always have a dark one way, light other way commute no matter what time of year, except a week in June where I can just about get away with no lights on the way in at 5am.

The night shift is now done both ways in the dark as it's not getting light until 7am, only difference is I have to charge the batteries on the lights midweek instead of getting a full week out of them

On the down side..

6 or 7 months of freezing miserable weather ahead
I have a severe bout of man flu
I've been off the bike for 9 days
work has gone completley tits up

But on the plus side...
Just had a new back wheel built for me and am ready to hit the road again tomorrow

Fine here, not to keen on the dark nights, but am enjoying the rollers, look forward to christmas, spending time with grandchildren, cozy evenings in with the wife, just need the weekends to be longer, life is good.
Cheers Del.

I used to work a rolling shift pattern of earlies, back shift and nights and really struggled during the winter and could literally go for weeks without seeing daylight and it made me incredibly ill. I'm a lot better now that I have a job with normal office hours but I do still struggle to get up in the mornings and will be digging out the Lumi soon.

Colin - Sorry about the anniversaries of your parents passing so close together. I lost three family members this year, two of them three weeks apart and am dreading the anniversary of each one. It's really shitty and probably the worst thing about getting older.
