How is everyone feeling

Dispite the approach of winter, I was feeling very upbeat. Im off to Italy cycling on Friday and certainly on a high looking forward to it. That was until I attended a union meeting tonight, the possibility of working an extra 7 years doesnt exactly fit with my plans for the future!

I was in an accident mid July, haven't ridden since, missed a whole summer, had to wear a full arm cast on my beach holiday, I work for myself, haven't earned since July 18th, my bike is stuck in a lock-up in Barcelona and I have an arm like a 7 year old boy. Oh, I suffer from SAD too and I'll be able to ride just when there is little point, tbh, I am a tad jazzed off right now.

Been feeling Blurghhhhh!
Started off with a tickly cough on Friday, by Sunday was at hacking mode, Monday eve feels like a tight band round my chest & I just can't take a deep breath. Am feeling rather lethargic & dozy, which I am putting down to not being able to get enough breath/oxygen.
The dark eves annoy me too.. During the summer I would often pop out on my bike once my eldest got home from work about 21.00, but the last few weeks i've been in my PJ's by 19.00 & snuggled up in bed with a book/magazine/tv by 21.00.
But.. On the plus side, only 7 more working days till can have a little rest & hopefuly get out on my bike during daylight hours

I used to work a rolling shift pattern of earlies, back shift and nights and really struggled during the winter and could literally go for weeks without seeing daylight and it made me incredibly ill. I'm a lot better now that I have a job with normal office hours but I do still struggle to get up in the mornings and will be digging out the Lumi soon.
I think that kind of shift pattern should be made illegal! Research years ago showed that it causes serious health problems for many people. It would certainly do my head in! I worked a night shift for a year, but it was a fixed shift so at least I settled in to it.

Colin - Sorry about the anniversaries of your parents passing so close together. I lost three family members this year, two of them three weeks apart and am dreading the anniversary of each one. It's really shitty and probably the worst thing about getting older.
Thanks. My dad's death was actually 7 years ago so I have got over that to a degree, but I still feel raw about my mum dying last Christmas. My family spent 9 days virtually camped out at the hospital so it was a very emotional and stressful time. It will be hard to work up any enthusiasm for Christmas in future ... The timing of their deaths was such that their will be two big reminders every year from now on.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your family members - three in just one year is awful.

I do suffer with SAD, but havn't as yet. It usually sets in when the leaves have fallen and everything turns a browny grey. God i hate winter. My back has started playing up though, every year, almost without fail, it acts up as it gets damp. Went for a few miles ride today and i can feel it deep in my hip.
The wife got me a 'happy lamp' a couple of years ago, the trouble is i forget to use it

My salvation used to be working in Cyprus for two or three weeks each winter if i were lucky, those days are gone now. I used to get a double boost, just the change of scenery was interesting, plus the temps were better of course.

I was reading the other day that one of the best ways to combat SAD is group exercise. If it wasn't for my spinning classes in winter then it would be much worse, although I do night ride regularly as well. But try spinning / RPM- it gets the endorphine flowing and is quite sociable too.

Since I moved to Scotland in 2002 I've never been too happy at this time of the year, how short the days are here is really obvious and not exactly pleasant, however, this year I don't seem to be too bothered about it, and last night I had my first ride in the dark, I really enjoyed it, 50km on my hardtail through the lanes and a few tracks around my home, just perfect, (perhaps it was because the wind hs finally died down) and I always enjoy the Sunday afternoons, early evenings in the pub, log fire and all that stuff. Things have also improved since our carport became a garage and I fitted a heater in there, cold nights fettling are now very pleasant. The wintering geese have recently arrived in big numbers, they're always good to see and hear each day.

Sympathise with those that feel down this time of year (and particularly those with certain anniversary dates falling into that same time frame, thoughts with you).

For myself, probably a bit like richp, always tend to be one of those annoying "bright side of things" person  .

I enjoy all the different times of the year for different reasons, certainly wouldn't want to live somewhere that was always hot.

Like the falling leaves, crisp winter mornings, snuggling down after a winter ride and a hot shower with my better half, but appreciate that at same time, have to put up with short daylight hours, wind, rain etc.

Thanks for asking though

Feel crap his week - stopped my pain meds on Friday/Saturday last week (not working/side effects), chucked up all night Sunday - didn't check the side effects - 'do not stop taking suddenly'. Feel like poop on the stuff, so I am back on them. Doctors not till early November when I can talk about changing them for something more suitable (yet more side effects to get used to).

Private pain clinic consulation taking an age through this 'company' that my solicitors use (Premier Medical are crap). Third party insurers dragging feet all the time, agreed an interim payment to cover medical costs from two years ago, but still not paid up (been going on months - medical reports complete etc etc.). Really hissed off with this case. Finding it a real struggle to get medical help from the third party insurers - they just don't give a sh1t. NHS just do the basics. The longer the insurer messes me about, the bigger their bill is going to be.

Seriously though, if you're feeling low now it must be a long hard haul. I generally feel winter starts to get on my titz in the dreary months of Jan/Ffeb and starts to perk up again in March when the spring flowers poke through.
