How long before my body gets used to commuting?

Used to do 32 miles either way round to Rochdale every day, week in, week out whatever the weather without complaint or much more than minor aches, of course the Turbocharged Saab helped but lets not split hairs here....

Surely conan the barbarian wouldn't be able to ride for long distances, he's built for power not endurance!!!
I work 6-5, I think that commuting in this scenerio is slot but I read and hear about people doing 80 mile round trips daily, and I struggle at the mo to do 3 days( alternating) and driving the rest. When doing this I've knocked training on the head in the week, using going to work a a steady ride, then the return leg as a training session.
I left last night @ 5 and got on the house 1hr 15mins later.

Good going Frisky,

I have a similar arrangement, three days a week, rest days in between, drive the other two. That's for a 20 mile trip each way on a fairly flat route.
I have become accustomed to it now, but still get DOMs if a cane it, looking for a PB, or swap to a hilly route off the main road. I adapted within a couple of months.
The reason I started was to save petrol when it went up to £1:20 /litre. I tried the whole week but became prone to injury, saddle sores, and spending what I would have saved, on food. I found it almost impossible to eat enough to get through the whole week.
I guess the compromise is working well for now.

Thanks biscuit. I'll carry on doing the same. I find that riding to work and knocking training on the head gives me more time with the mrs and kids.

Take it easy to start, until the legs get used to it. When I was in my early 20's I did a 40 mile trip every day - usually ended up doing 4 days, 1 day rest (or when weather was awful or I was tired) and then racing/training sat/sun - so having fresher legs towards the end of the week was important.

If your legs are heavy, take it easy.

Oh the thing I used to find hard, be that many years ago, or when I got back into regular commuting a couple of years ago, was the stop start, stop start on an urban commute. My long commute had hardly and traffic lights, so was quick and steady. That took it out of me at first, but it's ideal interval training.

Thank you, my journeys consists of around 8 miles of town riding, and the rest beautifull country side, not that I can take the beauty in, as I'm mostly breathing out of my arse and trying to look out for dodgy car drivers!

Indeed. I also have a young family, so using the commute to get the bike training in, helps free up time on a sunday.
