I joined the local authority after university (Masters degree rather than first time around 15 years earlier!) in 2005, got promoted after 2 years, and today is my last day after 5 and a half years in that role. I took my last week off as leave, and start my new job on Monday in a different local authority.

Prior to that I had jobs which lasted 7 years and 5 years. I reckon between 5 and 7 years is about right for any role, although reckon that a role change could be with the same employer.

First real job: 29 years, 8 months as self-employed, 11 years with my present employer. Been promoted internally 3 times but the way things are going I think I want to go back 'on the tools.'

I'm coming up for ten years this October! Time for a change maybe? Whilst I love my job, and the lifestyle I can't help thinking that ten years is way too long! What would be your limit - even if you enjoyed your job?

Careful, I worked for myself and had one main client for ten years. Like you I thought it was too long and I needed a change, so I got a job in a totally different industry and had two years of feeling like everything I touched turned to poo. Now I'm going back to working for myself!
5 years retired after 30 years of self employed (never had a real job) bored witless and wanting to get back on the road, if I can find a decent tractor unit at a good price i might do another few years
Having a real job is rubbish! You can't do what you want!

39 years, I started as an apprentice on the railway in 1974, I fear that i won't make 40 years though, as at present i am off sick and the condition will stop me driving trains or be near the railway in the future.
You can't do what you want when you work for yourself either - everything is your responsibility. Its continuous 24*365 and very wearing. I have never worked for anyone in my entire life (started off barrowing sea coal off the beach and selling it round the doors) but have always envied thoose in a 9-5 job with 5 weeks paid holiday, sick pay, pensions, everything really!
I thought I envied them till I tried it!
