2. I have a roadie for the summer and nice other days. The newbie to the household is a CX bike which has taken everything that I've thrown at it so far. Nice, fat knobbly tyres and it's great on the road, great on the trails and great in the mud.

Studs are pretty much the only way to stay upright on ice, and assuming these would fit your hybrid, then they should allow you to go and play in the ice/snow

Can you use studded tyres in normal conditions ok?

You can, they are just noisy and slow. In fact the manufacturer recommends you run them in for 50km to seat the studs properly.

One. But I only ever ride to work & back & I haven't met any ice or snow since taking that up.

The commuters only get that when its needed though.

I rescued my old Carrera from my mum's house, before it was sold and emptied. He'd been there for a few years collecting dust and looking sorry for himself,so i gave him the option of being put out for the scrap metal collectors or becoming my "winter hack". He chose hack and now he's happy with his new 32m tyres and new rear wheel, grinding out the miles on the salty roads. Meanwhile the other two sit there in comfort waiting for spring secretly wishing it was them out there.
