varying your route is not always easy when commuting but finding another say, 5k each way should give you another road or two to travel without putting you on your chinstrap by the time you get to work/get home and keep your ride interesting...when it comes right down to it though, it's all about how early you want to get up and how late you want to get home because there's nothing stopping you adding and adding and adding and only your fitness stops you then

I completely misunderstood the meaning of the title and wondered if it meant how many miles/km did I add on to a commute when telling non cycling friends about my ride. Sorry.

When I do occasionally commute to work (on days when I don't have 30kg of kit with me) I tend to travel home the 'pretty route' so another 5 or 6 miles is usual, unless its pelting with rain and then I head straight home as I am nesh.

Depends how I feel. At the end of one set of shifts I felt good so extended it from 8.4 to 34. Last month I was regularly doing a 15 mile route home.
Now most of my journeys are dark it's mostly just the journey, no extras.

Add about half a mile to my straightest route to avoid a couple of dodgy roads/junctions, will sometimes add on a mile or 2 on the way home but not very often tbh.

I am another one who thought that! It was easier in the pre computer days when all we had was a map and a piece of string or wool, Trace your route by placing the string/wool on the map and then pull the string/wool tight before measuring; you can add miles to your route!

By using the map/string method you can get at least 6 miles!

my most direct route to work is 6 miles each way. Up until a few months ago I would have added nowt to it, but I'm now looking to do much longer journey's and look for ways to extend the route. I aim to do 30 miles a day but tbh I don't always have time  I d'no if it's a fittness thing but I feel so much better, more energised and happier if I make a longer journey to work.

If the weather's nice and I haven't had much on in the morning I can make my mile-ish route to work a 4 or 5 miler.
If I cycle to the gym, just under a mile from home, I usually go by a 10 mile route.
I always cycle straight home though.

I get more tired after a 4-8 mile ride than I do for another 20 miles. There's something about getting warmed up and getting into cycling mode that doesn't seem to settle over a short distance. I get off the bike and have wobbly legs after even quite short trips. After 10 or so my legs feel exercised but attuned to the exercise.

Nothing .
10 miles each way with a manual job on rotating shifts and young kids so i am fecked by the end of the day anyway .
I do stick in sprints , spinning sections, power sections etc depending on how i am feeling.

I very rarely add any miles on. Occasionally, if I'm feeling great on the bike, I'll go down to the Quayside on my way in and sprint up a steep, cobbled climb to my office, but I did that the other day and broke a spoke.

I sometimes go down an off-road cycle trail, which adds around 0.5 miles to the journey of 7 miles each way. Mostly though I go the most direct route as I work night in a busy and stressful fast food restaurant at a motorway service station. I just want to get home as soon as possible and forget about the shift just gone.
