In an average bike, Road or MTB, roughly how many individual bits are there?

To the nearest 100 will do

Right. Assuming conventional 32-spoke wheels, there are 32 spokes, 32 nipples, 20-odd ball bearings and assorted odds and sods in each wheel. That's about 100 per wheel, or 200 in total. The chain is, in round numbers, about 100 links long. Each link is made up of two side-plates, a rivet and a couple of rollers. So that's another 500. There are two more main bearings, in the headset and the bottom bracket, each of which is about another 30 components. And another two minor bearings, one in each pedal. Say 100 for all those four bearings. Those are the only really complex components, so allowing an extra 100 or so for all the odds and sods gets you to:
200 (wheels)
500 (chain)
100 (bearings)
100 (odds and sods)
------
900 in all.
------
To the nearest 100, that's probably the best answer you'll get.

If you've got a hub gear you can probably add another 100 (in round numbers). Mechanical suspension will add a few but not too many.
